backwards roll

I have a '04 F150 I bought used in April. Before I take my truck back to the dealer, I wanted to ask you guys if this is normal. Whenever I take my foot off the brake while in drive and I'm on the slightest incline, my truck rolls backwards easily. I know this is normal to an extent, but it seems to roll way too easily, almost like a clutched vehicle with the clutch depressed. If I'm not paying attention. I'll easily roll into the vehicle in back of me. The same thing happens if I'm in reverse and pointed down an incline. I don't remember this happening on my '01. Thanks.

I have the same thing happening to my truck. Never really bothered me though but I have seen a previous post on this topic a few months ago and from what I remember...it was a common thing with these trucks.

My 04 does the same thing. A couple of weeks ago there was a bad accident near work and the detour was up a long steep hill. Stop and go all the way. What a pain it was trying to get up that hill with some dignity. The guy behind me learned pretty quick to give me some room.

With the rolling issue...i also notice the same thing. I discovered something though.
While you are stopped on a hill (upwards), shift it from "D" to "2".

If you let go of the brake in second gear the tranny seems to hold the truck into position. I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that but it sure worked. I have an 04 XLT crew with a 4.6L.

I think that all the 04's were set up that way. No idea how it works. My 06 won't do it.

My '04 has zero problems, at least so far, with rolling back even on significant inclines.

my 06 does it also, but the most I've ever rolled was 6" to a foot. Never anymore than that

My 04 also does this. My DD is stick though so a little roll doesn't alarm me. I just figure that is normal, it is a very heavy truck, mine weighed in at close to 6k. It can get annoying with a trailer though and sometimes I need to two foot it to feel comfortable on steep starts.

Have you tried putting your 04 in the 2 position? I am willing to bet that it will hold even with a fairly heavy trailer. I used it all the time when pulling my boat up a ramp. I actually miss it on my 06. As I typed that I just realized that my 06 does it too. It just doesn't remap the throttle as my 04 did!

BTW I learned about that 2 position feature from a much earlier post on this site.

I've asked a couple of service people to find out for me how this works, but have never got any info. It acts somewhat like an anti-reverse bearing on a fshing reel.

Thanks guys. I didn't think putting the tranny into 2nd on a hill would do anything different, but it actually works. Don't know why, but it won't roll backwards when in 2nd. Good info, especially when towing something.

Eventually someone on this site is going to tell us how that works. It certainly is a handy feature and you would think that Ford would publicize it more as a sales feature.

Maybe I'm not thinking right here, it would seem that if it is rolling backwards in drive then maybe the idle RPM is too low. Mine doesn't seem to do this, even on an incline that is substantial. Seems like it could be a problem, that could be flashed out.
