I just got a 05 Explorer, and I have never owned a SUV. Is it normal to roll back on a steep hill? Does this happen to others or do I need to take it in?
If the hill is steep enough, any automatic transmission will roll back. Typically it would need to be pretty steep. So I guess the real question is how steep is steep?
Our 04 does the same thing and the hill doesn't have to be very steep. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get used to it you don't pay any attention. It's almost like having a straight drive.
Yes, stopped, engine running, transmission in drive, and no brakes applied and rolling backwards? This hill is VERY STEEP, so I take it this is normal, and others have his issue?
Yeah, it the hill is over around 20° or so, it's normal. Idle speed will have an effect on it. It should be idling at around 500 to 700 rpm under the conditions you mentioned.

Well, I live in the flatlands, so it is not something I deal with often. I would think that is is probably normal on a very steep hill. I would just keep my foot on the brake and quickly move to the gas when it is time to move. But at least with your auto tranny you are aready in drive and don't have to almost grow another foot to keep the brakes applied-release the clutch - give it some quick gas and not kill the engine, all at the same time to keep from rolling backwards as you would in this same steep hill situation with a manual tranny. That dance takes some skill.
Hope that helped.
