Transmission problem or not?

I just bought a 2004 F-150 Supercrew and if im sitting on a steep incline like at a stop light or something and I let off the brake it will start rolling backwards. The pickup has 24,000 miles on it and still under the factory warranty. I also have a 87 F-150 and if im sitting on a steep incline it will not roll back when I let off the brake it will just sit there. Just wondering what some of you think I should do, take it into the dealer and have them look at it?? Thanks for the help

You're supposed to keep your foot on the brake when stopped.....

Welcome to FTE baker_racing. Unfortunately, I dont have a good answer for you. My 04 did that (do not own anymore). Have not noticed if my 06 does it....but I know a number of trucks on this forum have done it over the years.

Maybe your Idle is set too low and not giving enough revs to the torque convertor.

I do believe Ford designed the transmission this way. When you are driving at speed and you let off the accelerator the truck will "coast" rather than decelerate due to engine braking. A side effect of this is that the truck will roll backward when on an incline. My 2005 does it and I think it's normal.

^^^ Good point. Ford is trying every trick in the book to keep the EPA off their back when it comes to mileage for their fleet.

My 04 does the same thing. If you are sitting at a light on a hill, you better be quick taking your foot off the brake and putting it on the gas. If not the truck will be rolling down the hill backwards at breakneck speeds.

Same here. My son even commented that his Mom's Tundra will roll forward if you let off the brake. My truck will not and will roll backward on a hill. Mine is an '04 F150 Screw, 4x4 w/5.4L, and 3.73 ls.

if i'm on a hill, say backing up to a trailer, i gotta do the ol' one on the gas, one on the brake or i'll never get it backed up right.

Nope mine holds up to a point, it depends on the grade, interstate off ramps it holds very well. These trucks do not coast, the reason they feel they are not engine braking on deceleration is because they are in overdrive 0.77:1. Unless they down shift you will feel as though they are coasting but in reality are braking but not as hard as you would expect. Try taking overdrive off and you feel more resistance while decelerating.
