VGT=variable gate turbo. There are vanes inside the turbo that open and close as controlled by the computer. They effectively change the inner housing size of the turbine (exhaust) side of the turbo to change the boost pressure.
I hope these links work--they should answer lots of your questions about how the VGT turbo works
i think the "G" stands for geometry. but if one wanted to could you put a regular turbo and waste gate it on these? as there are not many aftermarket turbos for the 6.0 implementing vgt technology
How does a VGT turbo control the amount of boost? Isn't it the more exhaust the more boost? With a waste gate wouldn't it eliminate over boosting? Iv'e heard of these turbo's making over 33 lbs.
A waste gate controls the speed of the turbos turbine driver. The faster the speed the more boost created. The slower the speed the less boost created.
The VGT operates somewhat like a waste gate by opening and closing the vanes to control turbine speed. During initial start of the engine the turbo becomes a smaller turbine by closing the vanes. This in turn speeds the turbine driver up quickly building boost faster meaning better throttle response. As the vanes close more exhaust energy is used to drive the turbine faster (more of the blade area is used). Once the turbine's vanes start opening to control turbine speed less exhaust energy is used to drive the turbine (less blade area used) which in turn slows the turbine driver down.

You're quite correct--it does stand for geometry. Yes, I believe there are some working on wastegate turbo's for this motor. They are kinda pricey at this time as the availability is pretty low. At my age sometimes I need to put my brain in gear before putting my fingers into motion--LOL
