hello i have a 98 explorer eddie bauer and both the 4x4 and 4x4 low lights flash six times and stop and start again. when i turn the wheel sharp left or right it feels like it's in 4x4 and clunks. sometimes it does this and the lights don't flash sometimes it does not happen all the time i have 134k. any idea's thanks
There is only one t/c, it is bolted to the rear output shaft of the tranny.
The hale sensors are at the back of the t/c, one between the rear driveshaft and the shift motor, other close to the rear shaft bearing, 10:00 looking from the rear of the t/c output shaft.
after you get them out and cleaned, pull the neg(-) bat term for 5 min
Coastiejoe, the modules havnt caused any troubles, most of the problems are maint, and/or OP erorr related

I had the same exact problem with my 97 XLT. The speed sensors think that your rear wheels are slipping and are throwing the truck into 4wd. Since they are not slipping and you are on dry pavement it clunks. Also, when the light are flashing the 4x4 control track does not work and the back end starts to fish tail on wet roads. Here is my fix. There is an electrical connector that goes to the TC that is located on the driver side of the vehicle near the TC that gets dirty. Clean it with electrical cleaner and grease it with electrical grease. Replace both speed sensors (front and back) on the TC (they have wires coming out of them and are not the hard to locate. If I recall one was above and to the right of the rear drive shaft and one was to the left. I also think I had to remove the electric shifter to get to the one on the left of the rear drive shaft.) Finally, change you TC fluid. They sell tips for the bottles that you can use to squirt the oil into the TC - buy one and you will be happier. Except for lying on the ground in my driveway last winter the job was pretty easy.
