Hello all, I've been visiting this site for some time now and getting lots of good info however, never really needed to ask any questions...my turn now I guess.
I'm a proud owner of a 03 F-350 CC 6.0 w/46K of trouble free miles and I have seen in the past in the tech folder I think, procedures for cleaning/removing the EGR valve. I'm pretty sure mine is sticking, my reasoning is my truck seems to be loosing boost at times. I can hear the turbo spooling and then I can stop at say a light and start again and I hear nothing, the engine sounds fine just no turbo spool sound and no power. Once I give it hard throttle and reach approx 3000 rpms the turbo then kicks in and all is normal. I disco'ed the EGR sw and it happened again so I think its just not closing as advertised and needs cleaning. This does not happen all the time, just a few times in the past week or so but its definatly something I would like to address rather than take it in to the dealer. I live in AK with some cold temps to say the least and I'm assuming with carbon build up and single digit temps the past couple of weeks this may be my problem. Any suggestions??
well mine if they are sticking open, i replace them. but if they need cleaning then a cleaning i will go. take it to a dealer because if it need to be replaced, it is like over 300 bucks.
Here's a basic overview of cleaning: Remove both bolts holding EGR in place. Use big channel locks to pry side to side then up a little bit. Loop some bailing wire or coathanger around both ends of EGR valve base. Use a pry bar wedged up against your wire loop to finish the prying motion upwards. When EGR is free and clear use carb or brake cleaner and a toothbrush to scrub excess carbon off of EGR valve.
reinstall in reverse.
Also I noticed that you have a '03 w/ 46K miles. I assume you bought this truck new? If you didn't have an extended warrenty, you should still be covered under the motors 100K warrenty. It'll cost you only $100.00 deductible (I think....someone correct me if I am wrong) to get the EGR valve replaced.
Another thing I noticed, is that your from Alaska also. What part?? If your in the Anchorage area or Fairbanks it's been quite cold these last few weeks. Have you been ideling excessively? A "high idle" mod (if you don't already have one) will help you out alot. Also once you get your EGR valve either cleaned or replaced (if that IS what is causing your problems) then just unplug it, and never have to worry about it again. Just remember this......when you unplug your EGR do it with the motor OFF!!.
Hope this helps you out some.
Thanks guys, for sure its a warranty issue as I have already made an appt with my dealer, I'm just looking for a quick way to save some time as opposed to giving it to the dealer for a couple days. *******, I'm an anch guy not far from you and I don't idle very long, maybe 10 min max in the early am with it plugged all night. Thanks again
i to live in ak just north of anchorage and have a 6.0 and started having problems last winter while on a hunting trip the turbo vanes also stick and the prudhoe bay fix was to stall the trans and hold throttle down to build some heat , and you would hear "turbo flutter" too which causes lack of power . my truck is in the shop again and is getting reflashed with the 4th software for the early 04 6.0, take your truck to nye as cal just replaced the ecm a month ago and did not install the latest program and didn't even test drive it, anchsand_darryl
If anyone does need to replace the EGR valve, they can be had for under $185 at powerstrokeshop.com. Your call if you want to spend the $100 deductable or do it yourself for a few bucks more - just another option.
I have been having problems with my EGR valve as well and I have cleaned it several times and it was fine for abot a month then it would start acting up again. Well my wife took my truck to our mechanic today and she told me that he unpluged the EGR valve while the motor was running. What will that do to the truck/valve. All your help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.
