EGR question

With all the talk on here about how the fan needs the egr valve to operate properly, i went ahead and got a new EGR valve and installed it in the truck.

Now the truck has never had an egr valve in it in the year that i've had it..

its an 04, and i got it a year ago with 211k on it.

the turbo has always whined at me the whole time, and has always been steady..

after i put in the egr valve, now my turbo is being cycled on and off in about 4 diff stages..

stage 1 = a little bit of turbo/little bit of whine
stage 2 = turbo spools up more, decent whine
stage 3 = turbo spooled down, can hear the whine going away
stage 4 = no turbo, no whine, and the exhaust just gets loud

its doing this cycle about every 20-30 sec consistantly..

the truck was at operating temp, and disconnected the batts/turned on the lights/touched the positive/neg together for 10minutes.

started it back up, and same thing again, even after 10minutes of idling..

truck is in stock mode/no codes are being thrown, and when you step on the pedal, the turbo is consistant..

but if stopped at a light or whenever the turbo isnt loaded, it will start the cycling..

does the computer need time to relearn? or is something else wrong..
i do have the egr cooler deleted, but doesnt seem that that should be an issue as so many people have it deleted..

also have the latest software from ford for the PCM..

except for the cooler delete, and the exhaust, the engine is full stock.

if you have a delete then you have deleted the egr cooler and there is not exhaust getting introduced into your manifold so your egr is not doing anything but opening and closing. but good you have it plugged in for fan operation. (thanks cheezit )

i can see the non-sticking part, but it didnt do this till i put the egr valve in, and have had the truck for a year and a half..

and as far as it just opening and closing, i can see that as its probably looking for extra air from the exhaust that isnt there, but should it be/always going to be from now on, more or less turning the turbo on/off?

As posted earlier, the PCM is cycling the vanes of the turbo to keep them from sticking; one of the features of the last couple of flash updates to come out. Completely normal, guys with a "less restrictive" exhaust can hear it easier than those with the stock exhaust set-up. The truck isn't looking for more exhaust flow when it does that. Am I'm willing to bet with the EGR valve unplugged (MIA in your case) the PCM went to a default setting...sort of like the radiator fan non-spoil issue. If the truck isn't throwing codes, lighting up the CEL, puking coolant or smoking...I wouldn't worry about the last year that you've owned it at this point.

Yip, it is strange the first couple of times you hear the truck do that. Sort of like when it idles it's self up on a cold morning. Things you wouldn't expect a truck to do.

when was the pcm reflashed? i think i would find this very annoying, i heard about a flash that was supposed to do this, but i was not aware that it would be everytime you get to a stop light and so forth, i thought it was more or less random. i find the best way to prevent vanes from sticking is to push the skinny pedal all the way to the floor

oh, does the flash you have set the wrench light for bad deltas? i heard the latest strategy will set the wrench light for over 15 degree deltas, which is a good thing so even without gauges you should be warned

so it would throw a check engine light anytime you pulled a hill with a trailer, or at interstate speeds in the summer??? that sounds... like a bad idea.

Yip, supposed to through the CEL and put the truck in limp mode if the delta gets more than 15F.

Only if your oil cooler is getting plugged...which you want to know about that. If your cooling system is healthy then you won't see the CEL.
