i own a 2003 ford f-250 regular cab fx4 with the 5.4 v8, since i purchased it a few months ago i've installed a flowmaster dual exhaust system with 40 series muffler and a k&n fipk intake. i've been debating over weather or not to buy a computer chip as well. i've done a lot of research on whats available, the only thing thats stopped me from getting one is that a friend of mine told me someone he knows got one on his late model ford pickup and it wrecked his transmission. im not sure if this is accurate or not because he is a chevy man and he might not want me to install anything that would make my truck much more powerful than his . can anyone confirm or fill me in on the dangers of installing a chip, and what chip would you recomend for my truck.
I can't speak for the gas version but I did have problems with a soft shift with my superchip tuner. I sent it back in and they updated the files and it has run fine since. The thing to remember with some of these tuners is they have different options for different driving conditions. If you are running the high performance say, then you don't want to leave this program in if you are going to tow in excess of what the program is designed to do. A friend of mine just recently had his tranny rebuilt and his is chipped. I asked him if he was replacing the program when he pulled his fifth wheel and he said no. Did this contribute to the early failure of the tranny? Quite possibly. Just remember Ford builds there trucks to their specs not the companies that produce tuners.
Here's the long and short. Anything is better than stock, but it's a small V8 in a very big truck. If you have 4.11 gears it will help. I have had a hard chip from superchips, a micro tuner and I have settled on a sniper system for now. You need to define your goals. If your set with doing only exh, int, and maybe gears, it's a good investment. If you want to go farther with it, consider something that will do/accept custome tunes.
I had my F250 5.4L custom tuned by Troyer Performance. Definitely felt a difference. They have a group buy going on right now. I think the cost is $379 which is not bad at all for custom tunes. Planning on having my truck put on a dyno this weekend. I will post the results.
