I have a 2005 F-150 FX4, Supercab, with a factory installed enclosed subwoofer under the rear seat. My son has a 2005 FX4 w/o this subwoofer and I would like to have one installed in his truck before he comes home from Iraq. Can anyone tell me what brand name is this enclosed subwoofer? Ford customer support and dealerships could not help.
I recently researched the factory subwoofer/amp in my '05 SuperCab, even to the point of locating part numbers (6L3Z-18C804-BA and 5W4Z-18B849-AA) and came up virtually empty. My effort was in an attempt to obtain some specs so as to compare any aftermarket options.
Bottom line is I've since replaced my factory box, sub, & amp with an aftermarket upgrade that I'm not totally convinced resulted in any significant improvement. But regardless, I'd sell the factory equipment, which is brand new and will fit perfectly under the back seat of your son's SuperCab. Shoot me an email <tshupe@vcu.edu> if you're interested.
If he does not have the factory audiophile system you are better off going to an aftermarket sub system. The factory audiophile system comes with the necessary connections in the head unit to allow the external amp and subwoofer to work correctly. One other thing, since you have the audiophile system you have a different speaker setup in the doors. Your front doors have seperate woofers and tweeters I suggest you not only put in aftermarket subwoofer but also upgrade the speakers in the FX4 doors.
Here are a few places to look for comaptiable enclosures etc..
yeah, you have the Ford Audiophile system which includes a different head unit, door speakers and subwoofer/amp under the rear seat. So at a minimum, you would need the Audiophile head unit and the sub/amp. You can find these on ebay occasionally.
However, you need to locate 2 seperate wiring harnesses in your son's truck or else it will not be a simple plug and play install. The first plug is behind the radio in the dash, a small 4-wire plug along the main radio harness. Most trucks have that plug. The other plug will need to be located under the rear seat. Look for the slit in the carpet near the seat bracket and reach in there to find the plug. Not all trucks have the plug in there, my FX4 did not. If you don't have that plug, then you can't get the sub amp to work without doing a bunch of custom wiring. I went with an aftermarket sub and amp setup that works with my factory radio, and I've been happy with it.
Thank for all the information. You all provided material more than the dealerships and Ford.com. I looked under my son's back seat, located the slit in the carpet, but no wiring connector. According to your posts, this means I would have to replace the factory dash unit, door speakers, and install the sub-woofer? Mr. Shuper, is that what you are selling? The complete unit? If so, please quote me a price at pk3550@yahoo.com. I will check with my son. He is now not email capable as they are packing up for the return home in two weeks.
sounds like Shuper is selling the stock system. But you didn't find the sub plug in your son's truck, so why do still want to buy it? It will take a lot of custom wiring to make it work. First you would have to find a plug, and then get the wiring diagram from the Ford electrical manual to determine which wires are which. With all that wiring, it's much easier to just go with an aftermarket setup.
Thanks for your reply. According to Ford Customer support, my son's FX4 head unit is the same as my FX4. Shuper may have the harness with the stock system. And what's truly funny is I am doing all this and my son may want to put an aftermarket system in it on his own. When you hear the kids driving down main street with the boom boom boom, thats what my truck sounds like, so of course, I crank it up. Cannot thank everyone enough!
I wouldn't trust Ford customer support. The easiest way to verify is to pull the radio out of your son's truck. In order for it to be an Audiophile radio (able to work with the subwoofer), it must have 3 plug slots on the back of the radio. 2 large slots and 1 small slot for that 4-pin plug I was telling you about.
That makes no sense since the audiophile system only comes with the sub and the upgraded speakers. Ford support is not correct! Your son if he had the same head unit would have gotten the sub and the upgraded speakers. The audiophile system is an option. Check you window sitcker!
The audiophile head units have an extra connection in the rear of the unit that is not present on non audiphile units to plug up the sub.
Why not just leave the head unit and go aftermarket subs as presented, and upgrade the door speakers. Any stereo shop can do it for you! It requires a little wiring to connect up an amp andthe sub. If you choose, you do not have to upgrade the door speakers, it will just sound better if you combine the door speaker upgrade with the sub.
Thanks again SteveVFX4. Since his truck is still under factory warranty, 3100 miles, I will let an installer take a peak. With my luck and ability, I'll destroy it!
Hi Kevin. The truck was purchased used so there is no window sticker. He may want to do this on his own when he returns from Iraq. I am only his dad trying to make things easier on him
Everyone has been of great help to me. Just "built" an FX4 on the Ford web site to see the radio options. You folks are 100% correct. The Audiophile system comes with the amp, subwoofer, MP3, and six CD changer, whereas my son's FX4 does NOT have Audiophile, but has the MP3, and six CD changer.
Yup! That's why in reality unless you want to change the head unit just go the route that was recommended. He will be plesently surprised.
Oh yeah I forgot, tell your son we are all grateful to him and the others for responding to the call of arms. It takes great courage to do what they are doing. This nation is grateful! You must be very proud! Thanks!
Thanks for all the great ideas. Since he does not have the Audiophile head unit, I'll let him decide which way to go. And that keeps me out of trouble. I did put Flowmasters on his and my truck and ordered painted vent visors for his, smoke for mine.
We are very proud of him and all the military. His first tour during OIF 1, he was with the 101st Airborne and at the same time, his sister was an MP stationed in Tikrit, so we had double worries. Sis is out now, and son resides in Western Baghdad with the 10th Mountain Division. We cant wait to see him and he cant wait to drive the truck he bought, but never saw.
The Premium sound system and the Audiofile systems use he exact same head units. They are both CD/MP3 ready with a 6 disc changer. My '06 has a plug underneath the rear seat that connects to the amp/sub to make it an audiofile setup. All i had to do was order the amp/sub which was apprx. $310.00 dealer cost. I am sure you can get the wiring harness if you do not have it already underneath the back seat.
