ive got 3 computers set up in my bedroom... 1 is running win95, 1 with 98se and 1 with suse linux 10 because i dont want to pay anything to support microsoft. anyone else running anything besides windows xp?
i've got xp on all 4 of our comps, i'm afraid i wont be able to run all the software out there if i use linux. i hate microsoft...so for now i'm just waiting till google comes out with an OS.
how do you find linux to be in terms of software/hardware compatibility?
do you use Office? i've been using openoffice lately.
for me with suse 10 linux, i have no hardware issues at all but if you play video games or want to buy a piece of software at like walmart or bestbuy or something then you wont be able to run it with linux... but alot of software companies make linux versions. you just have to look. if you go to www.pctech101.com you can get linux distribution cds and dvds for really cheap, and if you just want to play with it you can install it with a boot selector for when you want to run linux or xp

You can run Openoffice on linux. Some distros come with it.

I have the Ubuntu disks but a friend is using my spare "test box" at the moment since their computer broke. When I get it back I will install.
I have a laptop that still uses W3.11. I use it for talking to my switch and PLC programming.
I figure WXP is my last MS OS if I can get Ubuntu to work well. I have a couple of programs that will still have to be run under WXP until I find replacements. Desktop Dyno is one. Anybody know of a good cheap CAD program like ACAD that will run under Linux? I run IntelliCAD now, has a few bugs but I can live with them. ACAD is major $$$$$.
My son will have to run MS until the game manufacturers get smarter.
Speaking of Operating Systems, and not to get off topic but, has anyone seen this stuff about Windows Vista? You are really going to have to have a real kick (insert) system to run it. It feels like the technology race has kind of slowed down over the past couple of years. We went from around 500mhz - 1ghz to 3ghz in what seemed like a couple of days then it slowed. I was kind of happy with how you can finally buy a system and be happy with it for a little while.
Now it looks like we're back to purchase a system and be immedietly out dated, thank you Microsoft.
vista dun take that much to run hell min system specs are nothing 800 mhz processor .. p2 had that speed 512 ram thats about common now ... 40 gig hdd they are making hdds that hold 10x that a 40 gig hd you can pick up for like 30 bux .. 128 megs of graphics ... tiny the computer that will take advantage of all the features isnt that bad either all your looking at that isnt widly used is a gig of ram ... and 256 graphics card which are quickly becoming common with any computer you purchase
