I'm looking for a narrow (measured from cab to tailgate) toolbox. RKI makes an aluminum one that's 15". Tuffy makes one that's about 8". I'm looking for something steel that's in between. Any suggestions?
Had not thought of that. I enjoy the occasional wood project, or accessory installation, but sheetmetal work? Hmmm, I'll have to check to see if the base where we're stationed has any reasonable sized breaks.
Did you make this molded unit? Or was this something you had made or bought? I've been interested in some narrow side boxes. These look like they flush out with the wheel well. I'm looking for that, plus weather/rust proof. Also something that I won't hear every tool rattle as I bounce down the road.
on the subject of building one...check the links in my sig. i built them out of plywood very cheaply. i submitted an aticle about them around christmas. still waiting for it to get posted.
Good luck trying to find the tailgate toolbox like tomtoc linked to. As far as I can tell steel horse and tailgator have both quit making them. I originally had Steel Horse's plastic one like the one in that article, but it warped really bad in the sun and didn't seal anymore. Actually it warped so bad that one of the latches broke off. I was then able to find an aluminum one from tailgator on ebay and put that on my truck. It worked great, but then my truck got rearended and screwed it all up. My dad says he has fixed it, but I haven't had a chance to look it over yet and decide if I want to put it on my new truck. I will say that they are very handy, but be prepared to lift a very heavy tailgate. I could still lift it with one arm but it was not easy. Most people had to use both arms, or squat under it and push up with their legs.
