Well it seems my stuck motor is not a 239! I was checking the block number and it starts with a B9AE, which I have found out is a 292. 292's didn't come in a 1954 so I am wondering if I have a 1959 (still waiting for the junk title), or if it is a changed out motor. The 54's all seem to have a short box and this one is long and the spare tire is mounted on the outer right side of the box. Is it a 59?
Hi,
It is hard to say what year you have without a picture or a Vin. Does your truck's front end look like the picture to the left, under my user name? you can click on it to get a better look. There is also a picture of a 1954 in my gallery titled "Dad's past trucks"
1954's came with both long and short boxes. You did not mention if yours was a "Styleside" or "Flareside box".
Up to and including 1956 only came with Flareside. From 1957 on came with either choice.
Shane, I don't remember from your earlier posts - do you have a vin number from the frame, door post, etc? If you find one and post it we can tell you what your truck is, what engine it had originally, etc.
It's possible that a junk title may have a random vin number having nothing to do with the particulars of your truck. Some states just assign an arbitrary number and call it good. The year assigned will only be what the junk yard claimed it was........
There should be an ID plate inside the glovebox door. That is the VIN on the top line.
The VIN is also on the passenger side frame, on the top rail just ahead of the cowl. Some Scotch Brite rubbing should make it visible.
Post that # and we can help ID.
The 239 was a weak engine and was often swapped with the 272, 292, 312, all Y Blocks.
Well I found out it is a 54. It originally had a 215 but someone put a 292 in it. I stripped the heads off last night to check the cylinders and I only see two that are a little rusty. I will have to pound those out and hope the walls aren't to far gone. Thanks for all the help.
