I just found out from the Machine Shop that my engine is not a 239, like I thought but a 292. So I have several questions. Since I'm restoring a 1955, F350, Flatbed, and had intended to keep it stock, the VIN shows it came with a 239 "Y" Block, it also showed it came with a three speed. Neither are true, it had and I've rebuilt the T95 four speed and now I have a 292 engine. Should I go ahead and rebuild the 292 or should I try to scare up a 239? I knew the camshaft was gone so I bought one but when I bought it I thought I was dealing with a 239, does anyone know if a 239 camshaft will work in 292?
I would rebuild the 292. The 239 is a orphan and has almost nothing available for it. The 292 on the other hand has pretty good support. I have a 312 Y in my 56 Fairlane, has been a great engine. Here are a couple sites that may help.
Thanks Rimrock F1. I was leaning that way too. Now that I'm 3/4 through my restore I've found that the engine and transmission are not original to the vehicle. Wish I would have investigated further then I may have gone a whole different route.
Also, I've found the 239 Camshaft may not work efficiently for the 292, so back to Dennis Carpenter.
