How do I eliminate the vent windows?

Jim, I'm still lost and please forgive my stupidity, but what exactly is the "runner" and why does the angle of this runner need to be changed inside the door? Is 3/4 inch channel something readily available at a glass shop? As you can see I am the village idiot when it comes to door glass. Can you send a copy of your drawing to New_Hampshire_Yankee@Yahoo.com?

How do I eliminate the vent windows?

this just thought of...
with the one piece glass kit, does it come with all the new hardware or does it require old hardware. more to the point, if i buy a kit(instead of making my own) does it come with channels and such or does it use old stuff, cause i would have to buy new stuff too.

How do I eliminate the vent windows?

Guess I should have mentioned that my application was a 48 F1. I screwed the window channel in just like original. Used stainless screws (#6) phillips head. The felt channel (Fuzzy and certainly not felt)attaches to the inside of the window opening next to the division bar runs around the opening and into a metal channel that runs down the inside of the door to keep the window parrallel to the division bar runner. At the end of the metal channel going into the door there is a clip that I bent down to get the glass in. The purpose of this clip is to hold the felt runner in the metal channel. It is not strong enough to be a window stop. There are metal tangs inside the door around the window opening to screw the felt channel in. I didn't even try to hit the original holes. Just redrilled and screwed it in. Make sure the screws are all the way in or the glass edge will scrap and make an awful sound.

Cost of complete overhaul? Depends on where you buy your parts. I probably spent $150 on seals, runners, division bars etc. New glass was $30 per window and $20 per vent. Used an old window as template. The power windows were EXPENSIVE! They work great though were not difficult to install and are pretty neat.

My observation: well worth the money! There is not a bit of wobble or rattle in my windows and they are amazingly smooth. Even when you slam the door! They are that tight.

I may be wrong but I don't see how a single glass could possibly be as tight and sturdy as stock. Maybe though. I just wanted the vents!

Let me know if you want manufacturers names and I will email.

Tim

The runner is the piece that the felt channel fits into and the glass moves up and down in. It could also be called a guide or channel. Anyway I will send out the diagram to you and if I can get some pictures I'll send them out too. My digital camera isn't the best but I'll try to get some type of photo for you. I had a piece of channel laying around when I made the runner but you can probably get it at a sheetmetal shop. You only need a little over three feet of it to do both runners. I was told by a worker at an area street rod shop that he could bend up the channel no problem and that is what they did on a 52 Panel truck they had there. I don't think it would be difficult to otain the channel in one of these ways. I don't know how the runners in the one piece glass sets mount in the door but mine screws in at the top of the channel and through the bracket to the inside panel of the door. If the pictures work out this will be alot easier to understand.
