Square Driveshaft?

On an episode of spike tv's extreme 4x4 they fabricated a square drive shaft. They used two sections of square tubing one slightly smaller than the other to slip inside the larger peice of square tubing. then they welded the yokes to the two pieces of square tubing somehow,

i was wondering if anyone has tried this and if so how well did it work, it seemed like a and easy way to make me a front driveshaft instead of paying somone to lengthen mine,

thanks, Nick

Yeah, a local guy built his out of square tubing. He did have to notch the inner piece to account for the weld in the outer piece, but other than that, it has held up well. Keep in mind that these are for non-street use as they wont balance well...

i'm about to build my front square shaft for ultimate travel and strength. I have the stuff, just gotta make sure i'm not gonna change the suspension again. its just reciver hitch tube and a trailer hitch. they wont balance true but really you would only need to use one on the front where the diff is offset and the travel is most needed. one thing to help keep the tubes from making a racket and noise is people put grease zerks on all 4 sides and pack the thing with grease.

How close of tollerances do you guys think should be in work here between the 2 peices? I would think if it was too tight, it would bind during movement under load, but too loose, and well you know.

well there is some noticable play but i plan to use enough tube on both ends to keep contact area to the max! also i'm not too worried about binding by being too tight b/c i plan to use MUCHO grease-o!

just get hitch extension tube, it is the correct size and is heavy duty. its like 1/4" thick and will take quite a beating!

Why not just get a splined P.T.O. shaft off of a John Deere baler like I did? It's got like 2.5 feet of slip area!
