In Bluff. Good internet service but no cell service. After today I won't have anything till next Tuesday if all goes well. I'll check in then if I can.
Yep Jack it was bad luck. I always thought that if I ever flopped or rolled it would be from doing something dumb. But for the ground to be so wet that it just gave way underneath - never in a million years did I think that would ever happen. It landed on a tree where the back of the passenger door meets the body. It crumpled the roof, door and RR 1/4 panel, also breaking the RR window.
The engine was running after it stopped rolling and not a single drop of fluids leaked out of any of the drivetrain. I had to get back in and drive it out because even yours and Boss's winch couldn't get it all the way out of the hole. It still runs and drives perfect. No alignment issues or shimmying. Ford trucks are TOUGH!! But I'm still glad I have a trailer to haul it home. I found a body shop here that will fix the shell for me. Today I had a mini truck junkyard cut the top and RR 1/4 panel (including rear window) off another 86 that was in pretty good shape and hauled it to the body shop. I only paid $400 for the body parts and a door. The body shop says it's in amazingly good shape for something that has been in a JY. The body shop techs will work on the side so it'll take 6 weeks or so but to save a bunch of $$$ I'll wait. They promised it to me by the end of June at the latest. Before I take Clyde to the body shop though I need to finish gutting the interior. Almost done. All that's left is to take off the spare tire carrier, put some beater tires and rims on it, pull the carpet and headliner and install the original seat so they can drive it around the shop. I hope to get it in to them by next Monday.
I hope you all are having a good time. What trails are you running?
I meet up with Chris Friday before last and we check in at the motel then went out to Comb Ridge and looked around for a while. Saturday we went back to Comb Ridge but went north this time over the old Hole-In-The-Rock road that is now Snow Flats road to hwy 261. That night we meet up with Boss, Boss's friend Jim, and Boss's son Joe at Halls Crossing. Sunday we went to to the Hall's Crossing/HITR road intersection. Then on in to start the HITR road. Chris had the bad luck and that seemed to not only rattle Chris but Boss and Jim also. We were able to get Chris back to Halls Crossing and he loaded up and headed for home on Monday. Monday we headed east and stopped at the ruins near Clay Hills pass then did the section of the HITR road near Cow Tank. That afternoon we meet up with Sundance at the Rangers Station on hwy 261. Then we went down Snow Flats (HITR) road to Comb Ridge and to San Juan Hill to camp for the night. Tuesday we went up to Blanding for a shower and to eat in a restaurant. Sundanace and I camped out again. Wednesday we meet up with Boss, Jim, and Joe and did Hotel Rock. That afternoon we meet Outlaw in Blanding and headed back out to camp. Thursday we went into Beef Basin and then up and out over Elephant Hill. Boss seemed to have some trouble with his lockers. Outlaw, Sundance, and I decided to to go up Lockhart Basin (the back way) to Moab. So we camped out that night. Boss, Jim and Joe took the hwy Moab for rooms and to try Poison Spider on Friday. Friday we made it through to Chicken Corners to camp for the night. The next morning I received a voice message from Boss that Moab was a zoo and so crowded with young kids they were unable to do much of anything. We drove on in to Moab over Hurrah Pass. We saw what Boss had said. It was wall to wall people. Most packing up to leave. That was end of this trip. Next trip will be to Colorado in August.
Glad things went well Jack! Sorry to hear about Moab though. Gone are the quiet days like it used to be. My first time in Moab was back in '89. I knew it was only a matter of time, especially after the internet came to be, that the place would be overrun with the spring break crowd. Jeep Safari is still fun though.
I'll be in Salida for the All 4 Fun 7/27-8/4. Hopefully we can meet up then or soon after - whenever your trip is planned for. Do you have dates yet?
