That's too bad. Sure would have been nice if he could have made it.
John said this morning he has the tranny and everything needed out of Jr. He drove Green up Saturday at 55 mph and lost 1st gear and had to use 2nd.
He has the t-case out of Green. I found the other brackets for the winch mount and took them to him this morning. So Green will have a Warn winch on the front of it and tow points. Clint picked up a Class III receiver hitch for the back. That will give some protection for the rear bumper and a good rear tow point.
Now I just need to wait for the fan shroud and locker to get here. And if I leave John alone I think he'll have it together for me this weekend. Then put some 31's on it and take some pic's.
Green was able to get a pic or two in the new issue of Off-Road magazine. It was an article Larry wrote about Roswell, NM and the real UFO crash site. When I bought Green last year I named it Mean Green. And I just started calling it Green for short. Now that the article is out I have changed it to Alien Green (AG) (you have to see the article). After the doubler, winch, and 31's I'm going to have to change the name back to Mean Green (MG)
LOL!! I'll have to pick up that issue of Off-Road today. Sounds like a good article. I like "Alien Green" or maybe just "Alien?" After all the work you're doing, stick an "R" in there to get "ARG!!!!" Roswell is a strange place, even w/out the alien thing it has going for it. Maybe the crash in 1947 contaminated all the local water supplies and after several generations the contamination is manifesting itself!! Seriously, I've had fun down there a few times. Carlsbad Caverns is well worth doing if you get that far.
With a doubler on 31s you'll be crawling super duper slow!!
Good luck getting AG ready for HITR. It's coming FAST!! 16&AWU!!
But with 3.73 gears it will be geared slightly higher (numericly lower) than Jr. was with 4.11's and 33's. Figured it'd do better as a daily driver with the 3.73's and 31's. If I put the 6" lift and 4.11 axles on it from Jr. and the 33's it would RPM slightly more and push a bunch more air going down the highway.
It's going to take a bit more time and work getting it over those trails though. Still looking for the little Ford SUV that will walk all the trails I want to do and get 25-30 mpg driving out there and back.
It's tough enough to find anything that'll get that kind of mileage with any room at all in it. Sounds like a lifelong quest LOL!!
I picked up the new Off Road issue at Walmart during lunch. Good article from Roswell. That musta been the trip you came thru Abq on right Jack? Wish we coulda met then. Also in the same magazine some people I know are featured in the Tank Trap write up. I don't like the trail because the scenery is butt ugly and you really don't go anywhere - just up and down rocks. I love rocks but there has to be some reason for going - destination at the end or scenery - Tank Trap has neither but NM4W is a good bunch of people. I'm not a member because there are dues and they have formal meetings, requirements for joining, etc.
Yup! Been my quest since my first 4x4 back in 80. Still haven't found it.
Roswell was the trip we did last fall. We started that up around Raton. Looked at the Capulin Volcano. Went up to Folsom where one of the Wild Bunch robbed a train. Larry is big in to Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch. Camped the first night over near Eagles nest. Temp was in single digits when we woke up the next morning. Took some back roads down to Ft. Union down near Watrous. Larry gathered info on the Santa Fe Trail. Camped the next night west of Ft. Union in the National Forest. Then we headed down to Ft. Sumner for some info on Billy the Kid. Then over to Roswell where we paid $35 each for a motel room. The next day we went up to Boy Scout Mountian to the crash site. After that we went over to Capitan where Smoky Bear is burried. That closed at 5:00 and we pulled in at 4:59. So we had BBQ at a little place (answere's the question where we ate that evening). We did a bit more and went back up to the Volcano again as it was closed when we were there earlier.
The trip where I was through Albuquerque was to Tuson. We have an old Pass Patrol friend in Green Valley that let us stay at a place he has. We did the Patagonia Jeep trail and then went on down to the old border crossing at Lochiel. The next issue of Off-Road will have another story that Larry did in AZ with one of his sons. The issue after that should have the Patagonia trip with more pic's of Green.
Thanks Chad. Fed Ex brought it to the right place this time. Last time Fed Ex tried to give "Shiba" to someone on Hydralic.
That's the good news. The bad news is the locker has a bad part in it. Good thing I checked it when it arrived. Richmond call me back and we went over it and they are sending me a new part and a call ship slip for the bad part.
Called John this morning. He has the C-5 in Green. Now he just has to make it work. Said he was going to work on it tonight and tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Looks like it's a go. The doubler and t-case are both in. John had to intstall and pull the gas tank and t-case a bunch of times but he finally moded the gas tank skid plate enough that it all fits.
The stock shifters from Jr. work. Or should I say Jonn made them work. John says the front drive shaft from Jr. works great in Green. He's going to bring me the rear driveshaft and a measurement tomorrow. I'll take it down to the DS place and have it shortened and ballanced. He just has to make sure the front driveshaft clears the cross member/tranny mount. He used the one in Green as there were frame differences and is modding it. Then change out the radiator and install the tranny cooler. Then get all the wiring put together so every thing works (electric shift t-case, cruise control, and back up lights).
Said he'll work on it some more this evening. Looks like it'll be on the road in a few days. Wooooooo Hooooooooooo!!!!!
Hey that's great news, Jack. Sounds you'll be rollin out on time next week! I've got tons of little things to do this weekend. I work thru Fri this week and M-Th next week. Time is precious when you have to work!!
