Hey, I got a couple questions. Now, Im not here to affend anyone about the cummins powerstroke or Duramax but.... How come People say ford powerstroke cant make as much HP and Torque than a cummins. I know bla bla bla the inline motor can handle more torque and that theres less moving parts but common, as a FORD FAN TO THE BONE how come people say your never gonna beat a cummins. Im fairly new to diesels and im in my last year of auto tech in high school and im starting to learn about how the motors acually work, so please dont be so hard on me.
Im just thinking is it becuase of lack of intrest in the powerstroke when it comes to the aftermarket people in parts?? Theres gotta be ways that the powerstroke can beat a cummins that has everything you can possible do to them. After all they are making HUGE amounts of HP and Torque from dragsters, Why dont ford lookin into that, 4 bolt mains?? Just little things to make it stronger. And also i read in a magazine that Cummins is making a new diesel that has the same hp and torque as the new 6.4 and its coming out pretty quick. Im sure there already working on aftermarket parts for it, So are they for the new powerstroke?? Im sayin get rid of the smog pumps and all that other BS and im sure you can find a whole lot more hp out of that motor. I think its REALLY Detuned. Thanks for reading Just curious i guess. Mike
We have a 99 F-250 at work sitting on 35s with 3.73 gears and it will chirp the tires when shifting and run 0-60 in just 7 seconds. I think it pretty fast, of course a lot of money has been spent on it too.
well, maybe one day you will learn in your auto tech classes there is more to making things move than power.
ever look at how much power some earth moving equipment have? or how about specialized moving eqipment, i just saw a show about a truck that can pull over 400 tons, all with a wimpy 420 hp engine.
i am not sure what your point to this is, there are plenty of aftermarket parts for every dang engine imaginable, except for maybe a saturn or something. and how much power do you really want or need? if you want to race, just go get an old truck, throw a big block in it and bam! you got your self a race truck.
and start removing this and that from these new engines your going to find yourself with a truck that won't start or run since it is all routed electronically through a computer. you want basic? go with a 6.9.
and these new engines make more power than any other engine ever put in a truck.
Yea i also read in a magazine that the 6.0 powerstroke pulls more than the cummins stock. Im thinkin its because of the 4.30 Gear Ratio in the dually. Well I guess my point is shaky. But! If you get the newest, I think its the newest but its a magazine called Diesel Power which im sure you guys all know about it. Its got a Dodge on the front end and its pullin in the truck and tractor pulls. Well heres my point, I went to a couple truck and tractor pulls and it seams like Alot of people favored cummins and the cummins always seamed to make the most power. My dad and i was talkin about it and some guy interupted and said the cummins will always make more than the powerstroke. After my dad buying a powerstroke that day and Ford Blue in my vanes i could feel my blood pressure rise. I dont know this point is hard to explain lol. I also noticed that all the powerstrokes that where pulling was lifted, I know theres powerloss to the angle of the driveshaft. And bf250 I had a Lifted 79 Bronco with a 460 all done up nice. I bet that would out pull a Cummins. Ok i found my point now! How come in that magazine all you see is Dodges. Also they seam to be the older body styles??
HA and also about me class. I got really lucky too. I got two instructors that hate ford. And believe it or not, out of 18 students i am the only ford guy. So i gotta hear ford sucks all day long. I just cant wait to get out of there. My instructor is a big chebbie guy and he said that the 460 Is the biggest dog. Well i happened to know one and It was far from a dog to me. I dont know he knows more i gues.
mmm...well, i never read or listen to magazines anyways, to vulnerable to advertisers influencing the articles. anyways, back to the subject, i guess the reason older dodges are in the pulls is because they are cheaper to buy than a ford andnot all that pretty, there for they don't care of they get tore up or not or modded heavy than a ford.
plus "always make more power" what does that even mean? any specifics why?
to me the cummins vs powerstroke battle is the same as 454 vs 460 battle.
and how much does one need to pull? there is a point when there is no reason to make a diesel more powerful for pulling due to the weight rating of the truck, and the manufactorers have no reason to invest heavily in making a super powerful diesel when the rest of the truck won't handle the weight anyways, they would feel that is what 2 1/2 tons and 5 tons are made for.
yea, You have an excellent point there buddy. Your saying that the dodge is Cheaper, But where does the 1994-1997 Powerstroke come into play? I know you probably know im talkin about the 99-03 7.3. Those trucks alone arnt cheap. But would the older 7.3 Give those guys a buildup puller a run for the cummins money? And are they within the same price??
i never actually looked at the prices, i know my friend bought a 1992? dodge 4x4 excab with a cummins for $2500 and it had about 150k miles on it. this was in 2001.
i know the 7.3 idi turbo and psd pull a premium still, at least for my budget and i am sure they are still pretty pricey for someone that is just going to use it for truck pulls, esepcially when do things like fry trannies and such.
i think the question of psd vs cummins is just a matter of money, and who will dump it in what motor.

There's your answer to this thread.
There are more aftermarket parts for Cummins than the Powerstroke. Also it's cheaper to upgrade the Cummins. Period.
I'm sure with enough money and enginuity, you can make a Powerstroke a dyno king against the baddest Cummins out there. I for one will not dig that deep into my wallet.
Man I dont envy you being in that sitaution where everybody is Chevy baised or likes Dodges. An two instructors to boot who hate Ford. How do you get any learnin done. An then one off them has the guts enough to say the 460 is a dog. I hate to burst his bubble but the 454 is a dog compared to a 460. A 460 would throttle any454 on the road or at a sled pull. I dont care what Ford has in your situation it wouldnt make any difference will all those Chevy baised people around. Powerjoke yah I bet you here that all say long. Dont take anything these people say seriously. I wouldnt.
Wouldnt it be nice to show up at school with the meanest looking Ford powerstroke truck. Dual stacks an show it off big time. Make sure you have Ford stickers all around an maybe for good measure have a rock crusher sticker in the back.
Also have another truck with that dogg off a 460 in it with the loudest exhaust possible an show it off too. Challenge your instructor to a race.
Just kidding. Dont let these people brainwash you. There are more powerstrokes on the road then Duramaxes an Cummins combined. Good Luck an man I will bet youll be glad this year will be over.
King, the thing is, powerstrokes are the most expensive to upgrade for big power out of the three, especially the 7.3L. The injectors are expensive, the high pressure oil pump, the rods, etc. Out of the older engines, such as the 7.3L compared to a 12V cummins, the cummins wins hands down for cheap power. All the top pulling trucks in the open classes (unlimited mods) are 12V cummins. It's just the nature of the engines. They also hold the power better than a 7.3L.
On the newer engines, say the 6.0L, common rail cummins, and common rail duramax, the 6.0 is still behind, as it's still using the HEUI system (hydraulic electric unit injectors). Common rail injection offers much more potential for power. The new 6.4L Powerstroke will be common rail, so the big three diesels will all be on the same level as far as their injection systems go. At that point, we'll see what happens.
But for now, cheap power goes to the cummins and duramax.
The never say never comes to mind... it doesn't matter what engines you are tlaking about, there is always a way to get more from it. To say a powerstroke will never make more than a Cummins is folly. To say a 460 will never compete with a 454 is folly. It depends on each individual setup, not just the manufacturer. Right now the Cummins has the best aftermarket following, and so it is cheaper to do, and has had the most effort put towards it. Cummins is the Chevy of the diesel world. Cheap and available, parts as well. Cummins by all means can be and is outdone, just you don't see as much of it because it is more expensive to build a powerstroke. The resale value says a lot, try finding a 94.5 and newer Ford diesel for less that 10,000... not real likely to happen, and when you do find one, better be prepared to put some money into it.
Thankyou all for your help. I will always be a ford man and it will never change. I sold my bronco with the 460, It had L&L headers and Dual 3 inch flowmasters straight back. I would just love to take that in there and show those chevy boyz a real truck. But i cant. I do however take my dads powerstroke in there every wensday. They all look but dont say anything mostly just give dirty looks. I however do learn a little. My other instructor is a mopar man, which i would agree that mopar makes some good older motors, and he dont make fun of fords as much as the other ones. I have much more respect for him so there for i listen. On the other hand my other instructor always talks to this kid who put a Supercharger and a cam in his Grand Prix 3800. This kid is soo cocky. And if they say anything about rebuilding fords that kid is always the first one to say YEA FORD SUCkS. One day i got fed up and he said that well the class was dead silent and i said hey guess wut moron u put over 5000 dollars into your grandmas car that only gets 6 pounds of boost and sounds like a honda civic. Hes like oo ok like your truck can beat it, i told him with exhaust guages and a chip i could spank yours and that would only cost roughly around 1800 bucks. The instructors told us to stop so i did but he got in the last word and said ford sucks again. With all that and a car that the school gave to us to make, which is a camaro with a 350 and runs 13's but has alot done to it. So between all that i go crazy. But thanks
Just gotta laugh those kinds of idiots off, they may grow up someday. It's fine to tease and joke, but there are limits... I stand by the fact that there is no one top brand, and there is always a faster car that you just haven't found out yet... One day Fords are faster, the next it is some other brand, it's all in the build. OEM doesn't max anything out, so there is always room for improvement. I don't outright dis any brand, but then I'm not one brand loyal, I pick and choose models or engines, not brands. Ford has some good lines, and some real poor lines, no denying that. GM has some good, and some bad, imports are no different.
