Question 2004 Explorer Can't read codes

2004 Explorer 4x4 4.0l. I have an Actron OBDII code scanner and get an error when I try to read the codes. I have checked all of the fuses under the dash and under the hood and can't find one blown. The CEL is driving my wife crazy. Any ideas? Is there another fuse location?

Dont know about yours, but on some Fords the "data link connector" & cigar lighter are wired to the same fuse.

Is your cigar lighter working?

Take a look at the fuse list in your owners manual, is there a "data link connector" fuse?

There is no data link fuse that I can find. There is no lighter. There is a power port but it is working.
I tested the scanner on my Expedition and it works fine. I have tried it on a couple others also and it works.

If you had the 04 Explorer EVTM/factory wiring diagrams it would take you a couple of seconds to figure this one out.

The only EVTM that i have is for a 97 & I guess yours is different since theres no DLC fuse.

A Ford dealer parts department should be able to pull up the wiring diagram in their computer & tell you which fuse the OBD port is wired to.

It would be nice if the manuals were available online.

Your car uses "Controller Area Networking (CAN)" technology which is only compatible with CAN compatible scanners. It's fairly new technology and won't communicate with generic OBDII scanners.

See if autozone will pull the codes for you, they usually do so for free.. (as long as THEIR scanners are CAN compatible)

good luck

That figures. Now I have to get another scanner. Autozone had the same scanner that I have.

Yeah, and that (AutoZone) figures, too...

Actron does not yet offer any CAN-OBDII scanners.
