96 ranger, code 1443 (vacuum sys.)

96 ranger, code 1443 (vacuum sys.)
my brothers 96 ranger is throwing a code 1443. looking at the code list on here, that is the vacuum system- PCS or PCV valve.
when throwing this code, what is the most common problems causing it?
im trying to narrow down my search before i start buying stuff lol.
does this code just mean that the PCV valve needs raplacing?

this is a direct copy paste from the OBDII diagnostic trouble codes page on this site...
P1443 Evaporative Emission Control System - Vacuum System - Purge Control Solenoid or Purge Control Valve fault
which i think is the same as the fuel vapor recovery canister solenoid your talking about.
how do i fix it though?

Well you'd want to do some testing to see whats wrong.
With the vintage of your ride, vacuum hose condition & connection tightness would be on the check list. Dry rotted vacuum purge line was the problem on my 94 Taurus.
Test for battery power to the purge solenoid. It comes from the PCM power relay, when the ignition switch is turned to "run". See if the relay is working, when you apply power.
Using a vacuum pump, see if the purge control diaphragm will hold a vacuum for at least 20 seconds, if not replace it.
Let us know what you find.
