Emissions laws?

My truck is registered in Cumberland County(Fayetteville, NC), we have been using the computer inspections for a while now, I was wondering does the new law require you to have a muffler and will it pass without one?

If your truck is a 96 model and newer you can count on it it will have to pass a visiual inspection but you will have to pass the sniffer test or as NC likes to call it OBD 2 emissions test the computer that the inspector uses can tell if something isn't working by hooking into your trucks or car computer.

sniffer tests are no longer used. It is not the same as OBD2 as obd takes the ecm readings and the sniffer used a probe in the tailpipe. The law in cumberland is exactly the same as union and meck counties are.

I would tend to say you will need the muffler and a tailpipe. Im not 100% sure in NC but back home you needed it. On a P.U. the pipes needed to be atleast behind the passenger compartment. If the truck your asking about is in your sig it will need the cat also and it will be OBD2 like Cliff said so it will get the sniffer and be plugged in besides the visual and safety AFAIK.

been OK there OTR, hope you have been well also. I have been watching for the next get together. I would like to meet yall, especially since yall are very local to me.

For the record, if the truck came with it from factory you will need it to be working for inspection. This applies to 1996 and newer.

OBD-II vehicles do not get the sniffer, just an electronic computer check and safety inspection. NC has done away with all the sniffer equipment.

Good to know, I was going by ncdmv's website which I guess has not been updated to reflect that.

Not to change the subject but I was trying to check into lift laws for a question in another thread and they state nothing more than 6 inches over factory height. I am over that and so are many others I have seen on the road. Anyone know the skinny on that?

I think that lift law is one of those that don't get enforced very much cuz the dudes at the inspection stations dig the cool *** look

Look guys, all you have to do is re-title the truck to a home made truck to bypass all the inspection laws. No one is going to risk a 10k fine because it looks "cool". Thats the possible fine for an inspector doing wrong. I was in this business for years so I actually know what I am talkin about this time. I sold and serviced inspection machines in NC. The laws have changed alot in the last 4 years.

OK, so you know people that dont care about themselves OR their family. They will risk their job so YOU can have a cool looking truck. So you know the pathetic loser that dosent care about anything but you.....and YOUR truck.....Have at him.....alike kind do stick together.....I run with men that actually care about their job and family....Sheesh...it takes all kinds huh BUDDY?

Its easier to re-title, but whatever. I have only done this for 20 years.....
