Doesnt make much sense, older cars pollute more...
That statement isn't true older cars do not pollute more than newer cars that has been proven time and time again. Don't fall into all the hype that the news and goverment tell you. It is all in how well you take care of a vehicle not how new it is. And if you think all pollution comes from cars and truck again you are mistaken there are factories all around the U.S. that pollute way more than all the cars and trucks can the only difference is they can buy credits from other companies who pollute very little and use those credits to keep polluteing as much as they want, even if they get caught and fined they will pay the fine since it is cheaper to fix the problem. And Blame cars and trucks for the main source of pollution is one of the ways they get around it.
so when are they doing away with emissions for good in NC? if so what years of trucks will be exempt??
In NC any vehicle 35 years and older are exempt from vehicle inspections.
So every car and truck that is driveable built before 1971 and soon to include 1972 will not be required to pass inspections here. Just 2 more years for my Ventura.

35 years or older.
I talked with inspector before it even became law. They sent a paper to all the inspection stations before it happened.. It has been in effect for 1 year now, as of october 2005, any vehicles 35 years and older are exempt from NC state inspections..
I was SOOOOOO pleased..lol
wish they had made it 25 or 30 years..lol
i know 25-30 would make it convenient for me (im in love with 70's fords)
by the way anyone know of any high-boys for sale in the NC area. Around 0-2,000$? around that price anyway.
What about diesels??? I'm straight piped--no muffler no kitty, but I don't have any kind of CEL and no computer codes. I need to know before I go, as I don't wanna be forced into a 30 day no play situation. Can anyone help?
As of now there are no emmisions tests for diesel, safety only. Depending on the year is what they look for on that inspection. Check the dmv page to be sure of what you need to pass.
I went to an exhaust shop here in greenville, nc and asked him to remove 2 of the 4 cats on my truck, but he told me not to because it would trigger the Check Engine light and wouldnt pass inspection. Anything I can do?
It might pass, even down two converters. My truck passed without the pre-cat the past couple years before the did away with the sniffer test. OBD-II is a completely different animal, though, so I'm not sure what you can get away with before the computer figures it out and throws the check engine light.
Look guys, all you have to do is re-title the truck to a home made truck to bypass all the inspection laws. No one is going to risk a 10k fine because it looks "cool". Thats the possible fine for an inspector doing wrong. I was in this business for years so I actually know what I am talkin about this time. I sold and serviced inspection machines in NC. The laws have changed alot in the last 4 years.
I've been told that as long as the exhaust exits the passenger cabin (the cab on a truck I assume), and that it doesn't leak, it will pass inspection.
I have an 07 with a dumped Flowmaster 40 (sounds great) and one day I was picking up some parts from a local garage that also does inspections and he told me my dumped muffler wouldn't pass.
I have until next June to figure out what to do. Does anyone have a dumped muffler that has passed inspection?
The relevant law (I think) says:
3. An exhaust system shall not be approved if:
(a) The vehicle has no muffler.
(b) The muffler, exhaust or tail pipes have leaking joints.
(c) The exhaust or tail pipes have holes, leaking seams or leaking patches on muffler.
(d) The tail pipe end is pinched.
(e) The exhaust system is equipped with muffler cutout or muffler bypass.
(f) Any part of the system passes through the passenger compartment.
first thing to do is look for a shop that will pass it
i have noticed that all shops do different crap and i dont think these fools have to take a course inspecting. because i took my truck to get inspected and i have a elderbrock breather 14 inch round 50 state legal, and the dude told me it had to have the factory breather ??? and would not pass the truck so i had it took to another shop they passed!
so i know different shops go by different rules or they inturpet the law in there own way
