I need to replace my CV axle on the passenger side. I have been looking for some information in this forum and haven't found anything on the CV axle. I was wondering if I would need to remove the knuckle or if I could get the CV axle out without removing ball joints and tie rod. If anyone could shed some light on this, I would appreciate it.
This is a 99 4X4.
Also, if you have any tips, I would welcome them also.
Yes it came apart. I found grease all around the wheel well. I found a crack in the boot and decided to change the half axle. When I was taking it out, I could turn the wheel without the axle moving.
After I got it out, I removed the boot and found a metal ring in pieces.
This happened after going on a rough road with some deep ruts.
When you unbolted your axle from the flange (the one that has a splined shaft that goes into the front diff), did your flange want to come out of the diff?
I am replacing my front drive axle (driver's side) and when I unbolted the axle from the flange and went to pull out the axle, the flange came out of the diff.
Is the flange supposed to just come out of the diff like that? It looks like there is a place for a snap ring on the end of the splines (the end that goes into the diff), but there was no snap ring .... is it in pieces inside my front diff somewhere?
My outer race on the outer CV broke apart and I was changing it out when I pulled the flange out.
Mine didn't come out. I just unbolted it and took the half axle out. I am not sure how it is connected internally. Steve(ILL) gave me the information that I needed. Perhaps he can answer your question.
