Do these sensors go out occasionaly? I replaced mine 4 years ago and now it is out again I guess. Engine has to warm up for 15 minutes before I can drive. Back pressure valve will not pull off when I accellarate engine just dies. I did clean off the soot off the sensor and tube but it still has the problem. I hope this is the problem before I go out and spend $150.00. Anybody have any other ideas if there could be another problem?
Yes, they can go out. They are just an electrical part, and are subject to failure just like anything else on the truck. Although it's rare, they can go bad. It sounds like you've taken the steps to be sure it's not the sensor with cleaning the sensor and tube out. One more thing to check would be the electrical connector on the sensor itself. Make sure it's free of any dirt or grime. If it's clean, you've pretty much narrowed it down to a bad sensor.
Until you get the problem resolved just unplug the sensor and it will default to the open position. If it is the second time you might want to replace the tube and clean the sensor before you replace it.
Well, I think it's actually called the EBP sensor, which stands for Exhaust Back Pressure sensor. It senses the amount of pressure in the exhaust between the motor and the turbo. The actual sensor is located on the front of the motor, right in front of the HPOP resivoir, but it takes it's reading from the passenger side exhaust manifold. The manifold has a metal tube coming out if it that goes up to the bottom of the sensor. The only function I know of for sure that the sensor does, is if your EBPV (Eshaust Back Pressure Valve) is closed, as it does in cold weather when you start it, the sensor will tell the PCM to open the EBPV when it senses the pressure is high. If the EBPV were to stay shut, you would have very little power and wouldn't make much if any boost. Also, some people have reported that it will affect MPG, but I have yet to put that to the test (will do soon though), and I don't know how it would effect MPG.
