1974 crew cab

i was just looking in the paper at a 1974 crew cab long box for 2000... i havent looked at it but if the body is as good as the ad says i was wondering what it would take to put the drivetrain from my 78 3/4 ton 4x4 regular cab under it, and throw a 460 in it. also if memory serves a 1974 should be 4 wheel drums, the 78 im planning on making 4 wheel disk

Sounds to me like you'll need some new driveshafts. Or at least modify the ones you have availible to you.

i know ill have to lengthen the rear shaft about 2 1/2 feet to compensate for the crew cab but the front should work with the stock length... unless switching from a lowboy to a highboy makes me need a longer front driveshaft but i dont think it will... i just have always wanted a crew cab, but then the 78 came up for 400 dollars and i couldnt pass it up

also i know the rear spring mounts will have to be moved in about an inch and a half on each side to compensate for the narrower frame rails, but would the axle need to be shortened? or will it work without sticking out of the wheel wells

maybe i should just forget about modifying it and just have them both... crew for hauling people and getting better mileage, and the 78 for getting through crappy weather

A 78 3/4 ton is not a highboy. You will need a carrier bearing in the rear driveshaft.

Only the 4x4's had the narrower frame rails, if memory serves. The 4x2 should have the same frame width as the 77.5 and up 4x4. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.

You are correct. Only the 3/4 ton 4X4's pre '77.5 had the narrower frames.

Incorrect. My 76 2wd Crewcab had the narrow frame in the back.

To many to list.

My 73 2wd also has the narrow frame (28in between the rails). The 2wd crew cabs went to the wider frames at the same time the reg. cab 4x4 did 77 1/2. The high boy (4x4) and crew cab (2wd) frames were the same except for the front cross members.

I believe all 2wd crewcabs had the narrow frame, I had a 78 f-250 and it was the narrow frame, I have a 78 f-350 now and it is also the narrow frame, I don't know about the 77 1/2 to 79 4x4 crews.

I hope somebody doesn't attempt to start up the "Define A High Boy" arguement again.

I thought there was a thread with a definite definition around here.

One of the "'73-'79 Fords" regulars or moderators oughtta' have a link on their sig. that says:

"The Definition of A High Boy"

Heck, maybe I should have that link in MY signature!

Their is but it seems to have been misplaced.

well for the purposes of this forum a highboy would be a 73 to 76 f-250 4x4 the bigest problem I think in swapping your running gear into the crew will be mounting the front axle the 2x and 4x are quite a bit different in the construction of the front half of the frame on the back if the srings dont line up right just move the perches but up front you need to find a way to put a leaf sprung axle and steering components where coils and twin I beams used to live
