1974 f250 4x4 question?

Hi all,
I am brand new to the forum. I recently purchased a 1974 f250 4x4 ranger. I lost my front drivers side wheel on my 2nd day i took it for a ride. yes it has Aluminum wheels that the previous owner did not tighten properly ha! Anyway Now it's in the shop rebuilding the drum brakes. I discovered that it has a front Dana 60 HD axel. I do have the original print out of it's options and it looks correct. The only info on these Dana 60 HD's is that they came on the Crew Cabs but mine is a regular cab? The truck has 78,000 miles Thanks for any help!

well it's what ever came in 74? I thought they were all low pinion? My brakes guy had trouble finding a brake drum for it and said that it was different than the regular 60 front drum? I dunno

I guess my question is does anyone here have an old 74 highboy with the stock Dana 60 HD front or is it rare? I wanted to double check my brake guys response. Thanks!

It's a low pinion D60, standard in CC's of the era, a highboy could of been ordered with one, though i would guess very few were, you're sure it's D60 and not a D44HD correct?

Yes it says Dana 60 front on the Ford print out along with NO A/C and chrome bumpers 360 2v.....pretty plain truck. no A/C vents are in the dash! I guess i'll be rolling down the windows. I'm enjoying the truck....i'm just trying to learn about it. Thanks for your input. Was Dana 44 more common?

The D44 was far more common, i'm not trying to rain on your parade here, and perhaps you already know this anyway, but the D60 you have is not the same as the highly sought after 78/79 D60, though yours is "rare" in the fact that very few highboys were factory equipped with a front D60.

EDIT: just seen your pic, nice looking rig!

Yes....I totally understand. i would love to have disc brakes and those open knuckes. I am just going to enjoy her as is and leave the good stuff for the die hard guys. I just was trying to figure out why my parts for my brake were hard to find and why I will probably end up paying more haha. I think she will be a fun sturdy girl to go hunting and fishing in and some day when I have a little more time i might switch them to the desirable d60's. Montana thanks for your repsosnes..your 75 looks great! Does it have disc or drums?

The one in my avatar is a '75, it has drums up front, highboys went to the open knuckle disc brake axle in '76.
