I am so stoked!!! The Highboy goes in for its lift tomorrow (Wednesday). I am going with the Skyjacker 2" lift in the front. Skyjacker provided a bigger spring for the rear and beefier springs up front to handle that added engine weight. I talked to them and told them about my issue with axle wrap under full throttle. They said it was primarily due to the factory lift block. They made a bigger spring for the rear to allow me to eliminate this block and reduce the leverage on the spring. They claim that the spring lift will make for 2 inches over the factory ride height. Now, I know that my factory springs are sagged really bad. The truck is still tall but the factory springs are toast. The fronts are darned near reverse arched from the added weight of the 429. So what was the factory lift on the highboy...4" over a stock height F250? So the Skyjacker springs should make it 6" over a stock F250....or about 3+ inches over my sagged stockers? I am going with Toyo Open Country M/Ts 35x13x16. I am guessing that with the tire and spring swap the truck should be 4-5 inches taller over all....what do you think?
By the way...I am pretty sure that my front axle is a Dana 60...so that should have no problem handling the added weight of the bigger tires...right?
I had a 67 f250 with a 460,4:56 gear ratio and 39.5 tires and never had any trouble with my front dana 60. Believe my I am sure my old truck was in some of the situations where if it was going to break it would have.
If you truly have a Dana 60 front (I don't believe they offered them in the older f250s?), it will be more than adequate to handle 35's and the weight of the engine. Even if you have a Dana 44, it should handle the 35s adequately. I run a Dana 60 snow plow front end in my swamp buggy with 5:89 gears, Dana 70 outer stubs, Detroit Locker and 52" tractor tires, and haven't run into a problem in 5 years. Keep in mind, you can break anything if you try, I have a friend that has broken 2 axles in his 2-2/2 ton rockwells with 44" tires!
It is possible that you have the D60 front end, but it is more likely that you have a D44HD, which will handle 35s fine.
I have some 36s on a 1/2 ton D44, and it does fine.
I really like those Toyo Open Country M/Ts, but they are so expensive. Just curious, if you ever saw the new Mickey Thomson MTZs? From what I remember seeing and wanting to get 35x12.50R15 were around $170, which is a great price, and they look alot like the toyos. Just my 0.2 cents.
Your truck should look great, make sure and post up the pics after.
A highboy came 2" higher than 77.5-79 F250 4x4s, this wasn't called a factory lift, just means the truck sits alittle higher....
