I am ready to start putting my truck back together and need some advice on the exhaust manifolds. I have some heat shield tin that pinches between the manifold and head. The parts appear to be origonal and a little rough even after a good cleanup. There is just enough missing metal on the shields to make me worry about getting a decent long term seal. I was curious what you think. Leave them off? use them as they are? Or use two sets of gaskets, one on each side of cooling tin?
I suppose I would like to leave them off just for looks, but I really would appreciate someone with knowledge of this change.
Thanks,Eric
The shield is actually a gasket as well.A little research in the book version of a gasket catalog like Fel Pro or Victor {NAPA} will reveal that some engines from the same family, either pass. or truck, will have come equipped with either the gasket or sheild type.If you have obtained gaskets already, they were probably the pass. or lt. truck type. Most 3/4 thru 2-1/2 tons came with the sheild type. And then again, because of obsolecence{sp?},the sheild may no longer be available. Some parts houses have contacts with a clearing house that will still have inventory on old #'s that are no longer cataloged.

I never even dreamed of the part still possibly being available. And I have not seen it listed in any of my f-100 catalogs. Maybe I should just try a generic part store. Would either of you know the correct name for the piece? I am unsure if it is called a heat shield or what. Heaven knows some of the guys working parts stores these days dont know there (classic?) f-100s Ha Ha
Oh ya to top it all off I'm dealing with the ugly stepchild year here (64). Had no idea when I got the old wreck it was so much different than the ones made just before and after it. Maybe when its done the whole country will decide the 64 is the most desireable thing out there. ha ha ha
Well I'll like it anyway
The name is 'exhaust manifold gasket' for both types. The option of shield type will come up in the same column or as a footnote on the page.I'll tell you what,if your guys say that they can't produce a part # for the shield type,or if you can only choose from one brand, let me know. Not to brag but I have {no longer doing}managed independant parts houses for over 12 years so I know my $44 when it comes to looking in the books as well as an electronic catalog,I'll just need to get to a store.

Went to the local O-riellys and they were sure they could not be found. Asked them to check in the gasket section an hurray! there they were . Should be here by tuesday.
Thanks for the help everyone
