Paint and Material Cost

I've been getting a few estimates for body work and paint. I want to have my 1966 repainted original Ford Wimbleton White with clear coat.
The body work is minimal.
I don't understand the paint and material cost
of $ 800.00.
Has anybody else had this type of material cost
with out labor?
I realize prices vary from place to place but I
thought the material cost was a bit too high.
What's up with that?

Paint and Material Cost

I have a friend who paints cars and he is allways talking about the costs of materials. I guess with the increasing enviornmental law changes, paint and related chemicals get more regulated, which means costs go up. My friends says that soon it wont be feasible to repaint cars anymore it will be cheaper to buy new ones, which hurts the classic car folks. Hey, where you gonna buy a new 66 F-250?

I price is paints are not cheap. I know that you may be comparing his cost to say Earl Schibe or Macco, but remember that they paint out of 5 gallon barrels. I think it is resonable to spend $850 or more on a good quality laqure or enamal.

Thats just my thoughts

A friend of mine just painted his 64 Galaxie that same color and his paint costs were over $600. It was not clear coat, but Acrylic enamel w/ catlyst. It doesn't sound that far off to me.

I do a little painting and I'll tell you prices are high! A good clear can run you a hundred dollars a gallon. I have just started painting my truck after a total tear down and color change. And I have spent close to seven hundred dollars full retail price dammit And I wont have any paint left for the box. It took more than I thought for the inside of the cab and hood and fender backsides. And you always seem to have a little paint leftover mixed up and nothing to use it on. So you loose some there to. Good tape is six bucks a roll. Got to clean that gun good everytime. It adds up

Paint and Material Cost

I am a painter in a local body shop in Georgetown, KY, i do the ordering from the paint, and the Cost for a gallon of our paint is over 200.00 hardner(base Color) and for a Quart of Clear is 125.00 hardner and Reducer. On average it takes about 1.5 gallons to paint a truck but if you check around you can get cheaper paint for 74.00 a gallon, but it doesnt look as good.

if i can be of any assistance, please let me know,

By the way I would ask the Shop what paint they use, id Stay away from Single stage (no Clear) in any brand, and for a base/clear paint id use Sikkens (what I use)*used on Mercedes, Some toyotas, Lexus, and others* , PPG is good, and SOME Dupont Paints are okay but not the best in my opinion.

Willie,
Scott is right on. I am enrolled in autobody for the past year. For example, it cost me $420 with a student discount for the paint to do my 1979 F150.

This was PPG basecoat/clearcoat DBC and their 2020 clear. It turned out like a show finish and should last a very long time. that was for a silver metallic. Your Wimbeldon white should be a little less. Less pigments in white cost less.

I would ask to pay labor only and make sure your get only premium materials (whatever brand, I only know PPG) used. Otherwise, you're spending all of your time trying to "keep the paint up" a few years down the road. Seriously, I've owned a few cars and seen many through my ucnle's dealership with cheap paint jobs. Nothing "goober's up" a car more than cheap paint.

One more thing, bc/cc system is the easiest to apply, easiest to fix boo-boo's. If you painter doesn't agree find a new one.

I did A little touch up on my truck and to have a quart of paint matched and mixed at a local supplier was only $30. They used Dupont Centari, acrylic enamel which is being phased out, but its good paint, and they got a perfect match the first try (its not a ford color). I think that you could stretch a gallon out to do a whole truck, if you reduced it a lot, and were carefull(reducer is about $5 a quart at the same place) clear coat is definitly the most expensive thing, I think it was about $50 a quart, but I didnt use it because it is harder to do touch ups later on.

Acrylic enamel is good for someone who wants to minimize cost. What you spray is what you get when you use enamel. It is not meant for buffing to a perfect finish or easy repairs later. Maybe the best way to put it is that Maico uses enamels extensively. There is a reason it is less expensive than today's technology.

I certainly wouldn't do your whole truck in enamel if it anything special to you.

if you dont stip off all of the original paint and it is enamel (which if original IS enamel) laquer might eat the enamel.
