i replaced my power steering pump on my 76 f250 and it keeps on whining at me. everyone i have talked to says it will go away after driving it for a while. it has been about a week and it is still making the whining noise. at first i thought it was the pump so i returned it and installed the new one. still had the same noise, so i bled the system and started to drive it around town. is this something i should be worried about? plenty of fluid and no leaks.
If it's bled and full and fluid I'm afraid you'll have to live with it. It may go away after a considerable abount of time. I've have pumps that were dead quiet and one that would drive you nuts. It must have to do with re reman process.
If the system has been cycled and the air bled out, then the noise comes from fluid bypassing from the high pressure side back to the low pressure side thru scratches and scoring in the valve plate and/or pressure plate. If it is noisy get your money back and buy another brand.
The reman/rebuilt pumps seem to be just cleaned and re-sealed at best. The quality of replacement pumps out there is absolutely abysmal. I needed a replacement for an Isuzu pump and bought a Cardone/A-1 pump, and returned it, and returned it, -got my money back and bought another brand (Atsco) which is still more noisy than the original pump but much better than the horribly mangled ones from C/A1. Some of the C/A1 pumps looked as if they had been run over by a Tank on concrete then painted and boxed, the ones I actually installed sounded worse. I lost my perfectly good silent OEM pump when I dropped it on concrete accidently:-) I would have been better off putting a new bearing and seals in my pump. To reman a pump properly may take a number of new components and the valve plates must be surfaced with some special processes to give them the proper finish and hardness. I suppose you could always take your pump to a hydraulic pump shop and leave it for a week or two...
Any time you replace a steering pump or component put a filter (Wix #58964 ~$17) in the return line. Rotate the steering wheel and push out all of the old fluid and replace it with fresh clean fluid. You may still have debris in the steering components but you will be better off.
this might be alittle late, but i noticed this with my 78 F250, i replaced the pump, etc. I finally replaced the belt and the noise went away. The belt was to wide, so it wasn't fitting into the pulley all the way.
i dont know if you tried a new belt, but it is worth a shot.
i aslo thought that all ford power steering pumps were noisy lmao. at leats they have been on all 3 of the ford trucks i have owned and all my freinds have had. i thinks its a ford trademark to have a noisy pump.
