How do I test my engine computer/
#16
not running
**** You should check your engine codes first*** this may save time and money.
I have an 1987 which needed a engine computer replaced. 1987 to 1989 trucks use the same parts. I have a 4.9, 300. The ecc box is on the drivers side behind the side kick panel. Under the hood, you can see were all the wires on the drives side go they run down by the cluth pedal.
I could not get my ecc rebuilt, I had to buy a new rebuilt one.
Good Luck.

Not sure what item you were referring to.
If you were referring to the spark, when the key is in the start position there is a wire that goes to the TFI Module that tells the TFI module to fire at base timing and not to look at the SPOUT. The wire is usually a red wire with a Lt. blue stripe.
If you referring to: “The main indicator of a bad EEC is if the Fuel pump relay does not time out when the key is turn on and that you can not pull the codes.”
This is a common posting on this and other Ford sites.
Feed back has seemed to make this true.
Most of the time the poster says that the truck does start and run but is running ruff and he can not pull the codes and the fuel pump will not time out.
This is the first time that I have heard the injectors not firing but I guess that if the EEC is bad enough that could happen also.
The main thing that goes wrong with the EEC is that the filters go bad. If you can not find another one most of the time you can replace the filters in the EEC and it will be OK. There is a web site that tells you how to replace the filters but I know of one poster that replaced them and the EEC still would not work, I guess he had other problems in it.

I found two methods for pulling codes on www.fordfuelinjection.com I'll go try that and if no luck order an EED. Tornado warninga and hail storms here in Ohio are keeping me from getting over to where the truck is parked.
This site does say that the pump will need to stop before counting the codes though. There is also a very long list of items to check. I have my work cut out.

I just recently had to replace my ECM, it did what yours is doing. What i found was one of the grounds was bad. According to fordfuelinjection.com, all three of the grounds have to be under 5ohms. One of mine was at 11ohms. I reran the ground, swapped out the ECM, and its been a few months now with no problems. In fact, the truck had been quircky for years(Cutting off when the gas tank got below 1/4, then starting back up again etc) And since I replaced the ECM and repaired that ground, it hasnt done any of that nonsense. I would say your ECM is bad, like mine was, as your symptoms are the same as mine were.
