I am new to this site and appreciate the chance to ask questions. I have a 1988 Ford E-350 motorhome chassis with a 460. It is the first year of the fuel injection. I am not getting power to either fuel pump. I have changed the fuel pump relay, fuel shutoff relay, inertia switch. It has spark and fuel inj. power while cranking. Since I am almost entirely electrical illiterate I hired a mobile mechanic to fix it. He was able to get power to the pumps through jumping the relays and confirmed that the wires going to them were intact. He deducted that the computer was bad. I proceeded to my local auto electric shop and asked if he could rebuild the computer or send it out to rebuild or replace. He said that if it has spark and current to the injectors it was not the computer. I am confused and don't want to spend $200 on a computer and still not have a running van. Help!!!! Please don't give me a too technical answer as I said before electric is my shortcoming. Thanks.
These are fun......When you first turn the Key on; Computer fires up the Fuel Pumps and Coil then checks for Bad Grounds and Shorts while your turning the key to start, this is the tricky part; if a Short is detected it turns off the Pumps for a no start (crank only). Low Battery voltage while cranking can turn off the Computer too, some new Relays can be junk right out of the box.................
Fuel Pumps, Cam, Crank, and even Oxygen Sensors are Ground Fault checked at first Key on...........I had a O2 Sensor wire ground out on a Trans Bracket once and cause a No Start.
That's the (fun part), A Harness anywhere that has slipped out of place and pulling sideways on a Connector, or a Connector full of water, rusted off pin, Chaffed Harness, Screw to close that has worn through a Harness, rusted or loose Spade Connectors in the Relay/Fuse Box, a Fuel Pump could be drawing to many AMPs, but it's rarely the Computer itself............Good Luck
