390 or not?
I found the casting numbers C3AE 8090C on the heads. From previous support from you guys I determined this was a 1963 vintage engine from a Galaxie and the heads are 406 cu type. My issue is there are not no.s on the engine bosses. I was told this is a 390, but the heads say 406. What do I have?

The heads are more than likely 390 heads. There are C3-C 406 heads but they use spring cups and have smaller chambers. They are also few and far between to find. They also had a larger intake valve. Your heads should have std size valves and chambers around 68cc's if they are the 390 heads. No spring seats either. Lots of guys often confuse the 390 heads with the 406's being both share the same casting number.

With an FE, head casting numbers have nothing to do with the engine's size. Especially after 40 years. Check the rest of the casting numbers on the block. The only SURE way to know what it is, many times is to pull the heads and oilpan to check the bore and stroke.
