warm up!

The valve thingy in the exhaust manifold is the device that forces hot exhaust gasses through a passage in the intake manifold. On FEs this passage is from the left rear drivers side and out right front on passenger side intake manifold. Sometimes racers will block this passage off to keep the intake cold and provide a denser fuel mixture for more power. First check the heat riser valve and its bi-metal spring. The valve should be free and the spring in place. The spring is strong cool and loose hot (bi-metal). Twist the counter weight to see if it is free. Then start the engine, lay the back of your finger against the intake manifold at the left rear. Within seconds that area should be to hot to touch. If it isn't the passages in the intake may be plugged with carbon deposits or blocked off. For you header guys go to the hardware store and buy some 2" flexible aluminum tubing. Run the tubing from the header to the air cleaner. If you can find one install the hot coolant spacer from Ford. Easy start up followed by stumbling and stalling are more of an indication that the choke has not released. Sticky accelerator is a real bad thing. Clean and inspect the cable, it may be frayed.

warm up!

I am certain that the frost build up on the throttle plates is what my problem is.Is there an easy way to unclog this passage way in the intake. The heat riser has been removed and should I try to find one and re-install?I would first like to make sure the intake is not stopped up!My intake does not leak oil and I certainly don't want to take it off!
Thanks,Russell

Russell, If the exhaust heat channel in your intake manifold is clogged with carbon or if a racer has blocked it with a solid intake gasket you will have to remove the intake. But first, get a functioning exhaust heat riser and install it. The passage may not be blocked. For a test, if you have dual exhaust; Cold engine, hood open, start the engine, have someone block the tail pipe with a rag, do the finger test on the left rear of the intake. If it got hot quick the intake is not plugged. I have the exhaust heat riser and the Ford hot coolant spacer on a cast iron 4 barrel manifold. Using manual choke and have absolutely no cold start problems. Let us know how this comes out.

warm up!

Checked out my cable and it looks ok...sprayed a little more carb cleaner to get the rest of the gunk off but the throttle was still sticking. However, I think the return spring on the carb is worn out (or it was replaced at one time with too large/and or long of a spring). The throttle cable isn't getting back to it's fully closed position (it's resting a little bit open but can be closed again by putting my foot under the linkage and pulling back).

Now for the stupid question. Can I use any spring to replace this or is there something special I should be looking for. #'s on the carb are C57F C B 5DA if that means anything to someone.

Thanks for the help.
