If the light comes on there is a code as has been stated get the code. Usually if its going on and off its borderline, get it fixed before it creates more problems. I had a vehicle that kept doing this it turned out to be my wife wasn't getting the gas cap tight. I bought a small cheap code reader to check on it after going 3 times to have somebody else tell me this. There are all kinds of them out there for under $100.
