Installing additional fuel filter
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,

OK.... fuel filters....
The two filter set-up on the 6.0L diesel is a great system and does a great job. The first primary filter catches the big stuff and filters down to 10 microns. The secondary filter (on top of the motor) filters to 3 microns (if I remember correctly).
Adding a new filter in-line (before in your question) will not catch anything and if it filters less than 10 microns could cause extra fuel line pressure that would be harmfull. The extra filter would/could also be a place for fuel gelling in the winter.
If cost is an issue, buy your fuel filters at your local Int'l dealer. They sell them for $30.00/kit (give or take) and are Racor made and OEM spec'd. Napa/WIX filters are NOT and that is another story that if you do a search or use my screen name will find plenty on!!!
At $30.00/kit (2 filters)... they cost less than at the Ford dealer, NAPA retailer and some other locations.... so why pay more to get less.
Here is what you want:
IH part number: 1847170C92
IH Motor Ref: 4.5L / VT275
(Not the VT365 that the 6.0L is based on - same fuel filters, different motor)
Cost: $30.00 - $35.00 / 2 filter kit (comes in one box).

Here is why Racor made filters (OEM manufacture) is key. Ford went "first class on oil and fuel filters for the 6.0L truck!!!!

Hope this helps.... just stay with what you have and change every 15,000 miles if no fuel related issues and know that you change the filters in 1 hour or less and save money by buying from an IH dealer.
Thanks,

you forget to change them and now you forget the 2nd one filters to 2 microns . . . Alas he is truly on vacation!

Good thing I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!!

Slept well, helped others with their filter questions and will go to the lake house Friday evening. By day... I am a working man!!!!
For the record... I am like Superman.... able to leap over a NAPA/WIX oil and fuel filter as they are shorter than OEM/Racor made in a single bound!!!! Had they been made the correct size... I would not be able to do it!!!

I got a question .... How can adding a filter pre-pump assembly cause extra fuel line pressure??
I've been wanting to add an aditional filter also and would use a 10 micron water seperator with a drain. I'm in FL so gelling isn't an issue for me.
If you can explain more as to why it's detrimental Beach I'd be appreciative.
Thanks

The money you spend on a pre-filter (labor and parts) can be used for more frequent fuel filter changes of the stock system?
Now for fuel pressure.... any time you add filters to the system, you are creating extra friction and reduced flow. The pump is trying to move a certain amount of volume through a known filter media and tubing area. By adding more filter media (10 micron or not) you are increasing the pressure/resistance... or whatever you want to call it... to the fuel system.
The 6.0L injectors are very finicky and do not like to be starved for fuel or oil as both are needed to fire them. No one has been reporting HFCM fuel filter issues except that it works and they have had to change them out more frequently after bad fuel or water (or both).
With a pre-filter, you will increase the need for more frequent fuel filters as Ford is going to want to know when you changed the stock ones and if you did so on time (every 15,000 miles)... regardless if you have a pre-filter or not.
Hey, buy it and try it... and I hope all goes well. Just seems like your asking for trouble where none exists with this motor????
Just my .10 worth.
Just ease of service that's all.
It all drained right into the jug from the drain hole, no splashing off of the frame, 4x4 shaft, etc. I used it again when I unscrewed the filter cap and the fuel drained into it there as well, a little onto the frame but then the opening was big/wide enough to catch that too.
I put the new filter in, the new drain plug w/ protruding ****, and all was quiet clean and mess free. The front end of the truck was elivate dabout 4 inches on a lip I have in my garage so I am guessing the fuel was staying in the tank pretty well too.
Just a thought . . .
