86 Holley 4180 c Fuel filter help.

I have an 86 f 250 351 with a Holley 4180 C carb. I want to install a new cartridge filter and attempt to delete the bronze filter or maybe keep the bronze one and add the cartridge one also. I have installed a wix inline prefilter in the rubber hose. My tank is full of crap and I need to catch all the stuff before it goes to clog my bronze line. Any other suggestions? The Wix inline filter replaced a Fram inline that let all the crap thru since they both fell apart.. Thanks

Put a new fuel tank on it. Where do you think all this junk is coming from? Is the tank rusted? They like to rust through on the top, and if that's the case, your trash in the tank will be never ending. New tanks are not that expensive.

The tanks are not that rusted on the outside. I guess it is time for new tanks. I just do not want to throw cash out for them. i figure if I can run an inline clear filter that shall stave off the inevitable for a while. I may just run another inline filter after the clear one in case another clear one comes apart again. She clogged up on the way down to my house then finally choked out right after parking.. She's a good old girl.

Might be able to just clean them out but you'd have to remove them and look inside to determine that.

I run two of the clear filters, one ahead of the pump and one after. The first one usually has to be changed frequently on trucks that have been sitting very long. But they usually clean up after awhile.

I will say, though, that my experience cleaning a tank by taking it off was very poor. We poured the old gas out, put two gallons of clean gas in as well as about 10' of chain, and shook the goody out of it, sloshing every which way. We poured that out and did it 3 more times. And when we put the tank on there was still rusty silt clogging the filters. So, for about $25 in gas and a lot of work it seemed like I gained nothing. Next time it'll be a new plastic tank.

New tanks are under 100 bucks each. A plus is my rear tank is an aftermarket so possibly I can get a larger tank or tanks. In the future after my Lottery winnings. Thanks.

There was a comment on this site a while back, about the ethanol "eating" the adhesive that holds some filters together.
A lot of radiator shops that used to "boil out" gas tanks have stopped doing so, due to EPA regs.

In the world of old cars and restoration, a new tank for $100 is dirt cheap. I know you might not have $100 to put into a tank right now, but just start saving for one. Your truck will never be reliable with a old dirty rusty tank. Ask me how I know. If you have two tanks, just buy one and run on that one till you get enough money for the other one(if you even need two tanks, you can run it on one tank).

Even my 7 year old son is saying Dad just get a new tank. I guess you all are right. I have been knowing the truth for a long time. New tank will be on order maybe a Christmas gift. I will go the slow route maybe i will change the rear tank first it is larger then the smaller side one will follow. Thanks all.

While you have the tank out you should consider swapping the filler neck for one from an '87 or later. Here's a link to a thread on it, and here's another link to a different thread. The later filler necks allow filling the tank at an improved pace.

Be careful, because shipping charges can be a killer from RockAuto.

I know when I replaced my rear tank in '08, a 'good deal' didn't look so good when I checked it out...
Ended up with a tank from Ebay that had free shipping.
It was under $85 delivered.

When I shop the Rock , I go to the check out and see what the shipping cost will be. Sometimes when ordering different items they hit you with additional S&H, so I might just get one item. I just sit down with my handy abacus to figure total costs.

Did get a new front 19 gal tank for my 86 off clist for $25. Sometimes it pays to browse.

I have bought a set of spark plugs or shocks and been hit with shipping from THREE warehouse locations.

This is unacceptable in the age of Amazon Prime.

I ordered a carb rebuild set for my brother on Friday afternoon.
It was delivered for free today (Sunday) by noon.

They can have some GREAT deals, but buyer beware when it comes to RA..

I like the filler neck suggestion....Get the gas in faster so it can be used faster. LOLL ING. I saw Amazon has some decent prices.
