Question Bouncing speedometer revisited

The speedometer on my '94 4.0 4x4 ranger is bouncing at speeds above approx. 50 mph. I have read treads where this has been attributed to a bad jewel (bearing) within the speedometer. However, I am not sure that my problem is caused by this because when the bouncing accurs the speedometer will be emitting noice. If the cause was a faulty jewel, I would not expect to hear noice as this should be a rather delicate part. At the same time the bouncing only occurs at temperatures below 80 F. This seems to indicate that the problem is related to a part which is lubricated by an old oil which has turned viscous.

Are there anybody who has some thoughts on this, or even better, experience?

Well without going back adn looking at old threads you mentioned making a noise and possible cause was a bearing (jewel as you call it) well when bearings get bad they make noises. second the speedo has a grease in it that could be getting gummy with age helping to cause this problem but when it warms up enough it thins out and works properly.
I don't say it's your problem just commenting on your diagnoses and description.

My old 94 had this problem; before I knew that the jewel was a very common problem on these speedos I went out and replaced the cable with a brand new one. No fix, and yes, I had the bouncing needle and the noise in the speedo head exactly as you describe. I just learned to live with it; it goes away once you run the heater for a bit.

If the speedometer is cable driven it is caused by the grease on the cable drying up.
The cure is take the cable jacket off the back of the speedometer, pull the drive
cable out of the jacket wash the drive cable in solvent dry it and lubricate it with
a thin coating of Lubriplate 101 grease or something comperable.
