But no matter what, I agree with Big, don't bother with a 400 if they call it a small block class run the cleveland, more support in the aftermarket, and even though we can agree it's a small block doesn't mean all tracks will agree, many places call the 351M/400 fords big blocks and put you into the big block classes where you will have to run against 466cid engines so why take the chance. But no one classifies the 351C as a big block, so no problems in that regard. I say why take the chance of ended up against bigger motors.

Good point on the track issues, i never thought of that (i've never run into the sb/bb issues personally though) but yeah the cleveland would be a great choice as well as you can get alot of power quite easily as they have great heads to start building power quick.

yea, clevlands are very nice motors form the factory, so they are a great starting point. the only problem is they can be hard to find, expecially the 4V ones......not that the 2V ones are bad either tho! and it's easy to turn a 2 Bolt main clevland into a 4 bolt main!

the 335 series heads will fit on a windsor block tho....you just need an adapter like thing between them and the intake, but other that that they work...and the Boss 302 is born! Canted valves on a smallblock!, that is awesome!

My brother got into the above problem when he pulled. He had a 351M and they put him in the modified class because... the engine was "modified". He tried to nicely explain to the how stupid they were, but still had to run in the modified class. He had people he was competing against trying to defend him, nothing like running a mostly stock 351M agianst stroked + blown big blocks.

Needless to say he lost. -myers

i agree with the clevland is your best bet i know around here and the pulling club i am in a 400 is considerd a bb but we dont run big and small block classes mostly for that reason you can stroke out a small block and get more cubes than a stock bb but anyhow just something to think about if you decide to go with a 78-79 one ton with the 60 front and 70 rear even with a small block in the 5500 class you might only be able to hang 100-200lbs out the front and that might be ok but the more weight you can hang out the front the better if you go with a older truck like a early 70's with the devorced set up you would be getting a good frame with no power steering but they steer fine so it frees up some hp and also if you swap out the front low pinion for a dana 44 high pinion you drive shaft angle will be stright so you have a less chance of breaking. and a 60 is a awsomw front but in the 5500 small block class it is over kill i run a 44 in mine and i run pro stock with a 460 and i hang 1500 lbs in the 6500 class and so far not broken it but i went with a spicer locker and i will swear buy them i have seen a few true lockers break and honestly unless you go with a clutch typ of a locker just weld it and a 60 will even hold up in the rear just remember keep it light more weight on the front the better
