My pitman arm puller doesnt fit ?!

I decided this morning would be a good time to spend a couple hours and replace my pitman arm seals. I got the nut removed no problem but when i tried to get my two arm puller between the arm and the housing I discovered it was too thick, Ok no problem, I ran to autozone and got a pitman arm puller. The pitman arm puller wont fit between the arm and the gearbox housing. I tried pounding a ball joint fork in between to no avail. How do i get the stupid pitman arm off without destroying it ??

Autozone has 2 different pitman arm pullers. One is for small vehicles and the other one is for full size domestic and small trucks. You need Part #27016. I went through the same problem. They gave me the smaller puller which didn't fit around the pitman arm. Had to go back and get the other one.

Also their pitman arm puller has a 1/2 inch opening at the bottom of the puller so you can use a 1/2 breaker bar or impact wrench on it. Advance Auto Parts sells the same puller for $12.00 with a lifetime warranty.

From: Wanatah In,
I did get the larger one, That is what puzzled me. It made me wonder if my pump has worn and caused the shaft to recess into the pump or something? It doesnt seem sloppy.
I decided on another day, Ill grind the fingers down just enough to get them between the arm and the pump and see how that goes.

That is strange. The shaft is splined and tappered. The Pitman arm only goes up so far on the shaft.

Good luck on getting the seals out if you don't have the proper tool. Some people say you can blow the seals out by removing the snap ring and starting the truck up.

My seal was leaking pretty bad and that method didn't work. Ended up taking the sector shaft cover off and punching the seal out from the inside of the steering gear.

From: Wanatah In,
Man I hope I can get it out with the starting the truck method. Changing leaking seals is one of my least favorite repairs to do since it really gives no improvement other than stopping the leak.
