I,m sure this has been beaten to death but what do you guys that have owned both or have knowledge of both, think which one is the better motor? Putting hp,tork aside.
This horse is dead. The question itself is only asking for ones opinion anyway, it can't be answered. The 6.0 has good points ( more power, better mpg...) and the 7.3 has good points (a rock solid engine that'll run forever...) but anything further is just one's opinion, especially considering how young the 6.0 is and it's untimely preticessor.
-7.3 is overall more reliable, including 05+ 6.0s in my experience (For the most part because of being simpler) About the only widespread problem is Cam Position Sensor failure which is pretty easy to diagnose and fix from what I've read. (Never experienced it)
-7.3 is easier on fuel. This has been my obseration from others. For what I use diesels for, they get terrible mileage.
-Now the 6.0 does have the far superior auto tranny and an overall better truck in the 05+ body years. Not to mention that they are more powerful and have a larger useable power band.
-However, the 7.3 can be tuned up to 6.0 stock power levels very reliably.
-On the same point, the 6.0 can be tuned much higher than most 7.3s ever will. This comes with the real threat of reliability problems such as blown head gaskets and turbos though.
I haven't owned my 6.0 long enough to give much comparison, both my trucks were as identical as you can get, other than my '99 was an F250 and the '07 an F350 (even down to the paint!), but a few things I can say so far are:
on my best mileage trip ever, my 7.3 could only muster 16.5mpg -- that's steady state fwy at 65 mph. I topped 21 mpg in my 6.0 during break-in (driving like a grandma on the fwy back from Oregon), I can only imagine what will happen when it's broken in and I set the cruise at 65 on flat ground...
Heck the 6.0 is quieter, tho it still retains a nice diesel sound! The 7.3 you couldn't talk next to, now my ex-duramax, well it was just too dang quiet!
No comparison in the 2 automatic trannys: TorqShift hands down.
We've only done one light tow, but the 6.0 still feels stronger in every way vs. my mildly chipped 7.3 (SCMT @ 60HP)
Ride is smoother and turning is tighter on the new F350, a benefit of the coil front end/longer rear leafs brought in for '05 MY (plus it's a BEAST for capacity...)
I think the '07s are going to turn out to be a highly refined and very reliable motor -- they've made all the updates they're going to on this baby...
Oh yeah, I sold my 7.3 to my friend/neighbor, so I'll get to do the long term comparison on the two trucks...
I had a 97 F250 7.3 psd. If I was just to compare the motors overall I like the 6.0 better. The 7.3 went through 3 cam sensors, 1 computer, 1 fuel heater. It left me stranded 4 times. It has a lot more low end torque than the 6.0. I sold her with 125K and she was still running strong. The 6.0 has had only 1 problem but it was caused by an aftermarket part not ford related. It has about the same amount of turbo lag as the 7.3. It has a lot more high end than the 7.3. Towing the trailer with the 6.0 will run circles around the 7.3. These are just a few of my comparison's of just the motor. If you want to compare the truck as a whole that's a whole different story.
