I just Bought my x less then 2 months ago. Ever since i bought it the Trans temp Gauge on the Front pillar has read Temps between 230 and 260. I took it to a dealer and they said they couldnt test the temp because i must have bought it with a chip. Cause there computer couldnt read Temp. So they shot it with a lazer. Sd the Temp was 180 or 184. Two weeks later (Last night) i am driving on the freeway. Starts slipping and catching. Fastest i could drive was 50. So i pulled off. started to smell bad stuff Like burnt clutch. Pulled into the nearest parking lot. When i stopped trans-fluid was puking out from under X. and a little trail behind. Any Ideas what happened? I have to have it towed tomorrow. Is a 2001 4X4 X with a 2-3" lift. and 315/75/16 on it, with the 7.3 psd and 72,888 miles. Does this sound like i am going to need a new tranny?
yep your tranny is toast.250 is way too hot for your trans to be running, somthing was wrong form the get go.even 230 with just the truck going down the road is hot.
good luck it's gonna be $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
pete
I was afraid of that. I have been complaining to the dealer about this since about two weeks after i bought it. took it to a dealer here in Phoenix. They sd fluid looks pink and must not be running at the temp gauge says. it is now about 50 or 60 miles over the warranty dealer offered. Do you think they will still have to cover?
Welcome to the club. (both the x and bad tranny club). My 01, V-10, 4x4, 3.5" lift with 315/75/16 did the same thing about 2 months ago at 77K miles. Search this forum for trans problems. I do not remember the specifics but I recall reading about trannys manufactured sometime in the 2000-2001 runs to have a few parts that were not up to the task. After talking to some folks I got a recomendation on a shop in Tampa, FL (Tim Moye Transmission). They were very professional, family owned, medium sized shop, very clean and organized operation. They took my trans apart, assessed the problem and gave me 4 options ($2000 to $3500) depending on rebuilt vs new vs performance parts and warranty options.
I went with the $3500. I took it back twice because I did not like how it shifted, and twice they made adjustments and told me "come back" if I was not happy.
If you want all the details I can dig up my receipt. I felt the warranty was pretty good. 3 years - unlimited miles - unlimited horsepower.
Search for a shop that does performance trans work, not one of the chains. Also ask how many F250 trannys they have done and whether they are familiar with this common problem.
Search this forum for others owners in your area and ask for a shop recomendation.
If you are going to spend big bucks, over 3000, get a BTS trans. Pretty much bulletproof and he has an excellent warranty. Ask anyone here if they are dissatisfied with his product and warranty.
How ironic. I have an '02 Exc, 7.3, 4"lift on 315's, and a bunch of Banks stuff. My tranny is slipping now too. I'll be watching your post for any info in the Phx area, I'm in Surprise.
I should have been more clear. Two possible coverages on warranty. Dealer told me, dependant on when was originally purchased Ford has 5year 100k on engine and trany for PSD. Second Coverage is dealer i bough it from, Babbitt Ford in Flagstaff, (they were awesome to work with and have continued to be awesome to work with) offers 3 mnths 3k. I originally took it in to a dealer here in the valley for look at 2k because of high temps. Wont say there name because they were horrible. I was very dissatisfied. Like sd in Previous note. Couldnt even test tranny temp. Best could do was lazer on a pan. I found out later that is a real bad way to test temp. outside pan temp and inside trans temp are not the same thing at all. Didnt even bother to test the gauge to see if it was accurit. right now is still under the 3 mnths and may be 100 miles over the 3000. not sure yet. Didnt look for the paper wrk to find out. It either will or wont. Either way it is going to be fixed.

If you have a relatively friendly dealer, they may do what's called "after warranty assistance" in which they may pay some or all of the repair. As for what caused this, there was a TSB on it and it was a part that Ford changed because it worked well on an older model.
They went back to the mechanical diode one way clutch as opposed to the sprag one way clutch (which worked just fine) they were using before. Once they realized their mistake, they had to issue a TSB and go crazy trying to rebuild the machinery they destroyed for the Sprag assembly.
As for your options, I'd spend the extra money and go high-performance. I didn't and wish I had. With a BTS tranny you won't ever regret it. I'm not sure, but Brian backs his trannys and work with a 3 year unlimited mileage unlimited power warranty. That's the route I wouldn've and should've gone, don't make my mistake, go aftermarket. Ford remans although slightly better than what you have are a waste of time and money; especially if you plan on modding later.
My tranny went out today TOO! I was headed home, about 1.5 miles way when I hear a loud thud, and I cannot continue forward.. dropped it into 2nd gear and was able to limp home.. call two placies, one has offered a reman for $1600 plus $150 if I want to hop it up some.. The second is checking on parts and warranty from FORD and will be calling back.. gave a ball park of $1400-- $2400 with 3/36 from Ford.
I just purchased a 7000 lb. RV travel trailer and I have 165,000 mile on my 01', the first tranny guy said there has been problems with the Intermead (sp) sprag?? I am debating Ford reman or BTS?? Any other suggestions..
Check to see what the mileage was when you took it in to complain about the problem the first time. If you were within your warranty then, you are golden. YOU BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN AND DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD. The incompetetence of the dealer in diagnosing the problem doesn't void your warranty. They can't just tell you it's OK and try to get you to wait out the warranty period. I am assuming that you brought it to a Ford dealer.

That's a good point, but I just went through a similar fiasco with the power deployable running boards on my '03 Gator. They never worked right and I took the truck in several times over the course of a year and they never got it right. The dealership pretty much waited until the exact day it went out of warranty, while it was sitting at the dealership waiting to be repaired (4/40) and denied any warranty based on rust. They didn't rust overnight, or since the last service appointment that I had taken them in for a month earlier (in the middle of summer no less). I wish I was making this up. Over 10+ hours on the phone with Lincoln (corporate) customer care to get them fixed, otherwise it was gonna cost me almost $2K for new ones. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and scream and yell loud and often until you get what you want and what you rightfully have coming. Best of luck...
