Diesel Catalyst and Emissions Testing

I just got a great deal on an MBRP Exhaust for my 2002 Excursion with the 7.3L PowerStroke. I have a question regarding the Catalyst and Emissions testing.

The MBRP exhaust does not have a catalyst and the stock truck does. I live in New Jersey so I do have to have emissions testing every two years when I get the truck inspected. Does anyone know if it is going to throw a code without the catalyst in the chain. I don't know if that is wired into the ECM or not. Second, will it pass sniff test on the exaust without the cat?

I see there are some aftermarket catalysts available with 4 inch and even 5 inch inlets and outlets from companies like Magnaflow and Random Technology. They are not cheap and I didn't want to spring for the extra $$$ if I don't have to.

So does anyone know?

FYI, I will be adding an Edge Evolution programmer to the mix and in the future I plan to upgarde the intake and add the Edge Juice as well.

I have had a Predator ICP module on in th epast which I loved but right now I have just been going through a Camshaft Position Sensor Failure and some other trouble with the ICP, so I am taking it out of the system, at least until things are stable.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I removed my cat and passed the test with flying colours (reading of 6.5 with allowable of 30)

As long as they don't do a visual inspection for the cat you should be fine.

if your really worried about it not passing a visual or even the sniffer then go spend $10 on some adapters for the orginal, yeah it will create backpressure because of it but its an idea.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Perhaps I will just keep the old catalyst and see what happens. That way if they flunk me, I can always put it in at least temporarily if need be.

Where's the Cat?
I have a 2002 CA model and only see a muffler under there. What state is smogging 2002's? If any you'd think it would be CA, but they aren't.

I'll have go under and look for myself. My mechanic said it is there after the Turbo but before the muffler.

I'll let you know.

I doubt it has a cat.

BTW, quite a few states smog test diesels. They do it here in Douglas County in Colorado. Load it up on the dyno and take it for a run, then I get a print out of the opacity reading.

You all were right, there was no Catalyst on my 2002 Ex.

I love the MBRP Exhaust though. It sounds great idling and accelerating but is still quiet when cruising on the highway. It definitely improves the power and torque. Without anything else on it, where it used to definitely prefer to cruise around 75 but I could make it go faster, it now is happy cruising at 85!. I'll have to watch myself of get a ticket.

I still need to isnatll my AFE intake and I can't wait for my Evolution to come back from Edge where it is getting the latest programs loaded.
