Non-catalyst

There is a sticker on the door jam of my 76 F-100 that says "NON CATALYST". Does this mean I don't need the converters?

Yup, that is correct. However, depending upon local laws, the vehicle may need converters if it will not meet the smog requirements for '76 model years vehicles. If the truck is kept properly tuned, that should be unnecessary.

Yup, but it should also mean your truck does not have converters on it right now.

I talked about this in another forum. To make a long story short, I had this truck for 4 years, never had any problem getting it to pass inspection, then this year the garage mechanic gave me a bunch of grieve about it needing a cat, but it never had one since I have owned it. Everyone I talked to said the 76 models had them, but according to the sticker on my truck it does not.

As long as you have the non-catalyst sticker, you are all good.

In 1976 the requirement for cat was determined by GVW. I know this because I did the research when I bought my first brand new Ford truck (F250) in '76. I was also an emission/safety inspector in the state I lived in at the time. I believe the relief from the cat requirement started in the heavy half ton. Mine was exempt and had the sticker. It also did not have the restrictor in the fuel tank runner and was not required to run unleaded. Surely yours is the same.

Mine is the F-100 XLT. It does not have the fuel restrictor or the cat, but it does say "unleaded fuel only" on the fuel gauge. I bought the truck from the second owner, whose brother was the first owner. I have looked and researched and asked questions from every person I can think of, and still get various answers. Even the owners manual uses the phrase "if equipped" when talking about the cat. I was planning on installing a cat myself just to be on the safe side, but if it doesn't have to have it, I won't.
I just want to make sure my truck is legal so I don't get into any trouble down the road, or end up with a truck I can't drive. Of course in 2 years it will be exempt from NC inspections so I will have no worries at all.

You do need the catalytic convertor. It came with one originally. Someone removed it.

Ford never put anything "non-catalyst" related on the door jamb.

I wouldn't put a cat on. The truck is that old that its not worth the fuss and the chances of getting busted are very slim. Glad mines a 74' so I don't have to worry.

I was just messing around with the picture in photoshop, and its pretty clear the the model year is 19x8. It looks to be 1998 or 1988. The sticker was probably pulled off some kind of diesel vehicle. A quick google search has some places listing cats for sale for a 76 F-100 as well.

Actually that is a "6". It's hard to tell from the pic I took, but if you look at it in person you can tell it's a 6.

Also there is another sticker that is above it that shows the manufacturer's date is 1975. You can't see it like it is, but when I peeled back the outer plastic you could read most of it. Here is a pic. DSC02315 pictures from trucks photos on webshots

I know this may be petty stuff, but I just like to know the facts and history of some things.

That is NOT the correct sticker for the 1976 F100. Also, that's the only partial area. It looks like someone cut that part out and stuck it on the door so inspectors who weren't doing their jobs wouldn't bother checking. As stated earlier, Ford did not make that sticker and they never put it on the door.

The decal denoting catalyst/non-catalyst were part of the engine decal, ONE decal found on driver's side valve cover. See link below for an example (most likely, not correct for your application).

1977 351 Valve Cover Emission Decal

Before I bought my 78 I did some research because I didn't want to have to mess with emissions crap. If memory serves me right this is what I found. In 1975 the federal gov set the weight at 6000 lbs, anything registered under that had cats and all the other crap. Anything over wasn't. California trucks were different I believe because Cali had their own standards. Ford made the F150 (registered at 6050) over the weight cap so they don't need emissions crap. All that my 78 has is a Pcv avlve and Egr. Then in 1979 the gov upped the weight to 9000 lbs, so now even my F250 (8800 lbs registered) has to have all the crap. If I'm wrong somebody please correct me it's been over a year since I looked all this up and I didn't save any of the sites I found the info on.
With the truck being 33 yrs old I would just find somebody that would pass it and not worry about it.

Look, it has the non-catalyst sticker. Anyone here claiming it had a converter at one time doesn't know what they are talking about. And that is a legitimate door sticker. Door stickers can't be transfered to another vehicle either, they will tear apart unless something dissolves the adhesive. There should be another sticker under the hood which will tell the vehicles smog equipment, and it will say NON-CATALYST as well.
