Doggie problems

Well we (the woman and I) live in a small one bedroom apt with a big black lab (Rocket) a small mixed puppy, mixed with ****zu and something else,he looks nothing like a ****zu(Little Guy) and a black cat (Panther). Well suprisingly thats not the problem. The problem is little guy keeps eating the walls and tearing up the carpet. Yelling at him and rubbing his nose in it isnt working. So I was wondering if putting cayenne pepper on it would work? I read somewhere that ppl do that for babies so they dont eat stuff. And if I do put cayenne pepper on it would it attract ants? I dont really think ants would like the taste of it but I just wanna make sure.

I know the apt. is going to kill us when we move out. I dont wanna see that bill.

Any other ideas would be appreciated

*EDIT* Well apparently you cant say ****zu

If its a pup and your training it...crate it or confine it to a safe area. Only let him out when you have him on a leash and correct him each time he does something diagreeable. A choke chain is good for this...not that it chokes him but more of "rattles" him. Dont give him a chance to fail.

I wouldnt go as far as pepper in case it causes other problems...like getting in the eyes...then you might get a vet bill.

Or..if there is a favorite wall he is after..cover it with a piece of plexi until he shakes the habit. Again..dont give him the opportunity to fail.

Get him some chew toys like a dong (or gong or whatever its called) full of peanut butter. I heard this works to keep them busy but it never worked for me.

Punishing after the fact doesnt work to well cause they cant remeber what they did wrong.

"Good Luck

You say you live in a small apt. What kind of exercise do they get? It probably isn't enough. They're probably bored. Give them some good exercise, not just going out to do their business and letting them run around for a couple of minutes and some obedience training and like RobinAB said, a couple chew toys.

For furniture biters, we mix cayenne pepper with olive oil and rub it on whatever is being bitten. No worries about the powder being blown where you dont want it and effective the very frst time.

Make sure the surfaces can handle it before rubbing it everywhere.

Chewing is a tough problem All thedogs I have had did it for the first year or two. Just part of the teething and growing up process I guess.

I have used Habanero pepper sauce on wood surfaces and it works, but... they will just find something else to chew. So give them lots of chew toys and rawhide stuff and keep them confined or away from other things to chew.

Some people claim Bitter Apple is effective, it is available at pet stores. I have not seen that it works.

One thing that at least one of our dogs can't stop chewing is books. Keep all valuable books out of reach. Never lay one down on the floor. We have lost many(over a hundred?) really nice books including several with leather covers and one family bible to these glue slurping hounds.

We had lots of wood trim in the kitchen and outside chewed up by our dogs. What a pain. One dog even chewed rocks. I think a lot of it has to do with boredom so keep the dog busy.

The only good thing is that eventually most dogs grow out of it, except the book chewing.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Well they really dont get a whole lot of exercise. We both work (I have 2 jobs) and the woman goes to work and school. So theres really not a whole lot of time for exercise. But we do take them to my moms house once or twice a week for them to run around in their back yard and play with their dog.

The rawhide bones makes the black lab sick, so that is a no go. It would be too hard to just let the puppy have one and not the black lab.

They do however have a bunch of stuffed animals and squeaky toys. They like to take all the stuffing out though.

We dont have a crate for him and I really dont like the idea of keeping him locked up ALL day long.

Any more ideas?

Thx for the help guys!

My first recomendation to people is always crate train your dogs. Once you train them it becomes more their home, private space and not a punishment. All of our dogs love their crates.

I second the question about exercise. Dogs need exercise and that means more then just a walk outside to do their business. They need real running and such. Find a dog park or open area where your dog can stretch it's legs.

Bitter apple works great. It is by far some of the worst, nastiest stuff I have ever tasted (long story let me just tell you from experience it tastes bad no need to torture yourself and taste it). Also would be to take a small squirt bottle and mix a real light mixture of Vineager and water and squirt his face if you catch him doing something he should not be doing.

Another good chew toy is "Bully Sticks" they are 100% bull male parts (good enough for the G rating still I hope...)

Couple of different websites to look at for them.

If you have access to the National Geographic Channel, check out the show, "The Dog Whisperer". The host states that he rehabilitates the dog and trains the owner. There is a wealth of information on that show and it's amazing at what he does.

My opinion is that if you don't have the time it takes to train your dog nor spend time with it...then you shouldn't have one.

Hey, I have empathy for you .
I had to train 3 of them at once.

Even with all the toys they had bought for them they still preferred chewing on chairs and other wood.

What I did was bring in some branches from the trees outside and let them go at them

I also sprayed the furniture with a product called "Bitter Yuck" by Natur Gro.

They don't chew on furniture anymore ..., at 1 year old they prefer expensive food & treats.
