Full Traction Coil Over Conversion

I have a 1999.5 super cab 4X4 PSD. I'm thinking about lifting it either 4.5" or 6". I was thinking that I'd go with the Donahoe 4.5" hanger, but I've read some good reviews of the Full Traction Coil Over conversion kit. Is the ride worth the extra cost? I don't use the truck extensively off road, but during October through January, it spends plenty of time on the farm, doing typical farm work, hauling buddies to deer stands, etc. Does the Full Traction kit reduce the amount of weight that the truck can tow? Could members who have the 6" kit on a 1999 to 2004 PSD post some pictures?

Thanks.

I'll give this the ol' bump. I'm looking at the same kit for my '01 4x4 CC. I was very excited to get the Oct '06 issue of OffRoad magazine because they had hinted the month before they would do a full review of the FullTraction coil conversion on their SD. They didn't go into as much detail as I'd hoped for, though. Seemed like a fluff piece, but maybe you should check it out anyway. On newsstands now.

I've also read good things about the ride improvement (which is a big reason I'm looking at the coil conversion) on the Donahoe Racing all spring kits. So, for the 4-6" kit I'll be doing for 35's on mine, I think it's down to the Full Traction coilover conversion or the DR all-spring.

I'd love to hear from someone that's done the Full Traction on a '99-'04...

It's a very nice setup, when coupled with some properly setup Coilovers.

We've installed a few, shipped out more, etc.....all with the end customer being very happy.

Here's some pics of a truck that we installed one of their prototype kits on:

As for towing....depends on what rear springs you go with. We generally use Deaver rear springs due to their soft ride characteristics and performance.

DR leaf spring systems are the best riding leaf spring lifts on the market for the SD IMO. We've installed and sold more of the DR lift systems than almost another other shop. Very well built and ride very well.

I run a DR 8.5" on my SD with 38s, love the suspension.

You really can't go wrong with either choice.

Hope this helps.

DC,

Do you have customer pictures of the 6" Coil Over kit? Heerburger, I took a look at the magazine at Barnes and Noble, and I agree... little fact and lots of fluff.

Anybody who has experience with this kit who can weigh in with real life reviews would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

So I didn't misread Full Traction's description, it really doesn't come with the coilovers? I do like the idea of being able to choose my own valving, pre-load, etc. But finding the right set-up can be a PITA. Are you guy's recommending any particular coilover and set-up with these kits?

Given how new these kits are, it may be a little while before we can get any real world experiences on them.

greatmej,

No, sorry...all of the kits we've done or sent out are sitting at 8-9" of lift.

That truck I linked to belongs to one of the shop guys....he used to run a 6" DR lift.

Envirocon,
Right. Full Traction offers their conversion in a variety of different ways, just the front bracketry, all the front stuff with blocks for the rear.....springs for the rear, etc..
We use King 2.5" Coilovers with the kit.
What's nice about the King's is that they are a high quality product...and it's easy to pull them apart and swap the valve and change the shim stack around to get them to ride exactly how you want.

You're right in that it'll be a while to get a lot of review on the conversion....especially due to the difference in cost of going this route vs. a DR 6-8" lift.

Were you able to decrease the turning radius of the truck at all by getting rid of the leaf?

...any answers yet on whether you get a better turning radius using this kit?

Will the tires hit the 4-link bars that are sitting in the same location as the leaf springs did, or does the decrease in width give clearance?

The turning radius is the same. The 4 link bar doesn't sit too much further inward than the spring. You can grind down the stops to get a little more turning radius but it may put a bad angle on the pittman arm.

Will an '05 steering knuckle bolt onto an '04 axle? Is there a difference between the two?

What is the width of an '05 axle housing vesus the '04?

Can you put an '05 pitman arm on the '04?

I am assuming the width of the '05 is wider to allow for more room for the coil spring, but then the wheel bs is greater, pulling the wheel back towards the frame so it fits inside the fender.

Is the frame width on the newer trucks closer together, or is the stock dimension from inside of tire sidewall to inside of tire sidewall greater on the '05 than the older trucks?

I guess my question is...what exactly allows the '05 to have a tighter turning radius than an earlier truck?
