Today I was driving down the road accelerating to about 45mph. and all of a sudden the truck just shuts off. So, I pull off the road the best I can without power steering. Than, I put the truck in park and it starts right back up like nothing even happened. ??? Than later that day the same thing happened except I was stopped at a red light and the truck, once again, just shut off completely back the position it is in when you turn the key on, the engine completely off. So, I cranked it and cranked it and it wouldn't start. Then finally it just started again, as if nothing had happened at all....
Has anyone even had this problem before?? Any opinions will be extremely helpful. We think that it has something to do with the fuel shutoff relay?? But, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
When you were cranking and the truck refused to start did you notice if the tach was registering rpm? If not it is a good indicator your cam position sensor is on its way out or gone. Intermittent no start or shutting down is also an indicator of the same thing. It is located on the front of the engine at about 10 o'clock position from the crankshaft front pulley (harmonic balancer). It is held in with one bolt (10mm wrench). If you wind up replacing be careful removing the old one - they tend to stick in the bore machined for them and, being a plastic part, it is possible to break one. I have used a small prybar, you just have to be a bit cautious.
CPS most common cause of dead on road Powerstroke.
Most of us carry an extra one with us and a 10mm wrench. If you need it today it is more than $150 at most dealers. If you can wait a couple of days you can get them for around $60 on ebay.
Another possibility is the thin tin nut on the end of the IPR. If it is loose it can send an intermittent signal to the IDM which can cause random stalling. It is on top of the front of the engine on the back of the HPOP oil reservoir. It is a little close to being underneath the fuel filter housing but you can reach a wrench in there to make sure it is snug. Do not overtighten.
Most people will agree that it is probably your CPS. It is not a waste to purchase one and have it as a back-up anyway. You will need it at some point and having a spare one in the glovebox may just get the horse back to the barn some night when you really need it.
