I got the timing chain replaced and got the engine running last weekend. This weekend, I installed an Edelbrock Performer intake and carb. Man what a difference!!!! This engine was so clean inside. When I removed the intake I expected to find half an inch of crud but not a drop. I didn't see any evidence it was ever gone into since it only has 54,000 miles on the clock and there were leakes everywhere (valve covers, intake, oil pan, front seal, etc). I can't believe I only paid $300 for the whole car.
As a reminder, this engine and trans (FMX) will be swapped into my 64 very soon. After I get it running smooth, I plan to pull it out, clean it up and add a few performance goodies and eye candy.

Keep them old Irons rollin'
krosati do yourself a huge favor and put a C6 behind that 351 the FMX is a light duty tranny naver intended for a truck. I had a 72 Stang with a warmed over 351C and an FMX. I killed 3 in the year I drove(flogged it).

Richard, If the FMX was never intended to be in a truck, why do I have one factory installed in my 66. (C-O-M) I'll agree that the C6 is a better tranny, but mine is 35 years old, has been rebuilt and is still running.

I have to agree with Cobraguy. I destroyed 2 FMX's behind a stock 351C with 3.92 rear gears in less than a year. The C6 is a much better transmission. Granted, it causes a parasitic horsepower loss but it is comforting to know that the C6 is almost bullet-proof.

Well, I for one am glad to hear they can last anywhere from 6 months to 35 years!!! Just Kidding
I don't really know a whole lot about Ford engines and even less about the transmissions. I've been into Pontiacs and Olds most of my life but am enjoying the hunt for information on the Ford products. I now know most of the differences between the famous Windsor, Cleveland, and Modified motors. This board has been a platform for much of the info and continues to give me viable end-consumer info as to what works best, lasts and/or fails to the rigors of time and multiple owners.
I appreciate any and all comment regarding the transmissions since I want one that will last yet perform when called upon.
As for the slushbox of current discussion, I will install this one for now since it comes already attached to the 351W. I guess if it doesn't work out, I can always swap it with one of the others since I will have already installed the mounts.
John - When you decided to rebuild your tranny, what had happend to it to make you go ahead and do it?

I took it in to have the fluid changed and they found metal in the pan, so I had it rebuilt. I had the C6 rebuilt for the other truck at the same time because I wanted a new tranny to go behind a new engine, in a new install.

Krosati just so you'll know here's the history on my FMXs. I bought my 72 Stang with a dead FMX so I got one at a wrecking yard it lasted about 3 months 2 weeks after I put on a 4bbl and headers it went south. So I had it rebuilt at a reputable shop. The rebuild shop warned me it wouldn't stand up to my habitual flogging and they were right it lasted 6 months. I got one more FMX from a wrecking yard and wrecked the car shortly after I put it in. My advice to you is go ahead and put it in but take it easy on it no block long burnouts or 6grand neutral drops. And keep a lookout for a C6 to put in in the future.
Rich, I don't think a C6 would take that abuse. I know you can buy race trannys but probably can't find one in the junk yard.
