I just got handed down a 1964 f-250 4x4. It has 292 with 456 gearing? I don't know anything about the kind of truck it is. Does anyone have one to give me some pointers? Thanks
First thing to do is to look at the VIN # found on the drivers door. Then you can start with some of the basics. Like finding out for sure if things were changed since it run off the factory line. Take picutures of it and go talk to parts guys (preferably the older guys). Go to the library and look up referance material on your truck. ie... old chilton manuals and things like that. I hope this helps to get you going in the right direction.
What kind of info do you need to know?? If after checking the vin tag codes and if you find they are different than your truck, either someone changed somethings, or the door is a replacement from another truck and the vin tag wan't carried over....
There is also a VIN # stamped into the frame on the passenger side near the fire wall. How you like those apples? If the door doesn't match the frame go with the frame. Chances are it's the original frame. LOL
I can tell you that a 3/4 ton 4X4, V8 with 456 gearing wasn't meant to get very far from the work site. Put that baby on the road and up to cruse speeds and it might get 6 mpg.
It'll pull like a bulldozer, and as long as you keep it slow you might be able to afford to put gas in it. :-)

The 4:56 isn't quite that "bad" John. Did I ever tell you my fire truck has a locking 4:56 in it? I think that truck has some get up and go on the highway, don't you (especially considering it weighs 7200# empty)?
I bought a 64 F250 4x4 about 4 months ago and am trying to learn more info about it the best way i have found is visiting this site often these guys have a lot of useful info.
Thom, I do recall that truck is pretty powerful, but I don't recall you getting much over 50 on that run, what kind of mpg running at 60-65 mph?

Actually John, we were doing about 68 on the State Highway. As for mileage, well let's just say that if you have to ask you can't afford the gas. :-)
That is what I was trying to get across in my first post. Those setups are work related and not for hiway use. Doesn't mean you can't run it on the road, just means have your gas card handy if you do. :-)

That truck was my dad's and it was a work horse. I'll keep it just the way it is. Whats the price of gas compared to history and compared to memories. Thanks for all the info guys..
