Stopped by the local junkyard today. I happened to look under the hood of a 79 supercab f250, and at first glance, I thought I saw a 351M/400 with the big dist. cap and all. But wait a minute, the thermostat housing is different, and the valve covers said powered by ford. the engine sticker is in blue, but isn't readable. I got the intake casting numbers written down, and then I had to move on, since it was closing time. Anyhow, is it worth going back, is the question that remains. Here it is: D1AE-9425-CA the 9 might have been an 8. 0630 was the date tag next to the part number. Firing order is 13726548? so, my instincts tell me it's a W, but hoping it's a C. Any clues?
My money is on a 351W. With that firing order and a different T-stat housing than a 351M/400, that's sure order for a Windsor. Should be able to get a true ID from the VIN if the engine is original.
The key here is the firing order. FE and 460s have a 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 friring order. 351M/400 and 351W have a 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Since he said the T-stat housing is different from the 351M/400, that leaves only the 351W.
